Jailbreaking your iPhone 2G/3G using Firmware 3.0 & redsn0w for Windows

Due to the ammount of repetitive questions and concerns posted on the release thread of redsn0w ( http://www.modmyi.com/forums/iphone-...lock-tool.html ) by poetic folly. I thought I'd create this post/guide helping those who are having these issues.

As previously mentioned please understand that redsn0w ONLY jailbreaks iPhone 3Gs and DOES NOT unlock the iPhone 3G which means that if you have another cell phone carrier other than AT&T you should wait to jailbreak your iPhone 3G until UltraSnow its released.
iPhone 2G on the other hand, can fully benefit from redsn0w as it WILL jailbreak & unlock the iPhone (2G that is)

So lets go on with the instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone using the redsn0w application for windows:

IMPORTANT: Make sure you backup your iphone (Contacts, Pictures, Videos, ect before proceeding!!!

1. Download the redn0w application from either of the following sources:
redsn0w 0.7.1 for Windows Megaupload Rapidshare

2. Download the 3.0 firmware that applies to your phone:
iPhone 3G 3.0 Firmware .ipsw
iPhone 2G 3.0 Firmware .ipsw
(some users have reported that when downloading the firmware file they're getting a .zip file extension after the .ipsw - so the file downloaded looks like this iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw.zip if this is the case for anyone downloading the file in a MAC or Windows machine DO NOT double click on the file as it is NOT a compressed file, INSTEAD rename the file to iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw and you are ready to continue on with the jailbreaking

3. Now that you have both of the needed files, open the redsn0w-win_0.7.1.zip file you previously downloaded and you fill find 2 folders, (_MACOSX and redsn0w-win_0.7.1) open the redsn0w-win_0.7.1 folder and double click on redsn0w.exe

4. Once you double-click on redsn0w.exe you will see the following screen:

Click the image to open in full size.

5-A. Click on Browse and you will see the following screen. Here you will browse to the folder/path where you saved the 3.0 firmware to (where is your iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw file?)
5-B. Select the iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw and click Open

Click the image to open in full size.

6. After opening the 3.0 firmware file, redsn0w will say "IPSW successfully identified (see below) so click on Next

Click the image to open in full size.

7. On the next screen you do not have much of an option except to leave "install Cydia" CHECKED so click on Next

Click the image to open in full size.

8. At this point do exactly as the screen says, have you iPhone connected to your computer and make sure the device its OFF. Once you have your iPhone connected and the device its OFF click on Next

Click the image to open in full size.

9. Here you'll have 3 seconds to press the Power Button (wake/sleep button) for 3 seconds (I didnt find this to be a mandatory step as all 3 times i've jailbroken a phone, i did not press the power button but you are instructed to do so by redsn0w)

Click the image to open in full size.

10. Now you'll have 10 seconds to hold down BOTH buttons (Power & Home buttons)

Click the image to open in full size.

11. After 10 seconds have past, release the Power Button (Wake/Sleep button) and KEEP HOLDING the home button.
(once the countdown gets somewhere around 21 to 19 seconds redsn0w will detect the iPhone is on DFU mode and will proceed to copy the necessary files to the phone in order to jailbreak it. At this point you may release the Home button)

Click the image to open in full size.

12. You will see your iPhone come on with the HD (hard drive) image on it and a message saying that Downloading Jailbreak Data... be patient and soon you'll have a 3.0 Jailbroken iphone.

13. Once your iPhone reboots... you're done!

Enjoy

Note:

1. The first time you try, your iphone make get stuck on the Downloading Jailbreak Data... with the respringing circle on it, eventually the phone will actually go into "RECOVERY MODE" which is the image of the CD with an USB cable on it. If this happens just RESTORE your phone via iTunes which will install a non-jailbroken version of 3.0. Once the iPhone is back up, try again and it will work (I tell you this from experiece)

2. If your iphone gets stuck on a "black/blank" screen after redsn0w said "done" you will also need to restore using iTunes, then try again.

Good luck and happy jailbreaking...

I take no credit on the development of redsn0w and do thank everyone involved on creating our first 3.0 jailbreaking tool (for both windows & Macs) in such a short time

Not sure if you got this figured this out, but maybe to help others. If you get Error 14 you need to put the phone into DFU mode. and then load the firmware.

Download the latest iTunes version then while holding the home button connect the USB cable to your iphone. This should put your phone on RECOVERY mode... once itunes detects the phone go ahead and give it another try.

Also, it never made much sense to me but i've seen many post of people getting the same error and having it resolved by changing from one USB port to another (try that as well)

Good luck

I rebooted my machine and tried again (from a different usb port) and it got a hell of a lot further than before, but stil lthe same problem.

The phone seems to be stuck on the usb / itunes screen. dont seem to be able to turn it off! hold down the top right button and the iphone flickers black for a second then goes back to the same usb/itunes screen.

only1pj,

That's the recovery screen. Connect the phone to your computer and open iTunes. Itunes its going to recognize the phone been on recovery mode, go ahead and click on restore and let it do it... once done try again.

itunes recognises that the iphone is in recovery mode. It goes through "extracting software" "preparing iphone for restore" usb disconnect/connect noises from the machine "Restoring iPhone software". iPhone has apple logo and progress bar (filling up slowly) ..., ..., ..., then it craps out and come back with the error "Could not restore".
