For some reason I cannot come up with the solution to my problem, I have before but the solution escapes me now. When I download the .ipsw file, it shows as a compressed folder (zipped). The file ending however, says .ipsw. Because of this I cannot open the file in redsn0w because it is a folder and not a single file.

put your cursor on the zip file. right click to bring up the menu, click rename, change the .zip to .ipsw

Thats the problem... its a zip put it is already an ipsw. I cant change it to ipsw because it already is. The file is not a .zip but it is a zipped and compressed file with the ending .ipsw.

maybe try deleting it and download from a different source, may or may not work,
iPod and iPhone Firmware Download
can probably find a few more with a little googling if you already use this one.
You may also want to try a different browser if that doesn't work.Last edited by ronzo; 06-20-2009 at 11:24 PM. Reason: add on

Hi There,
I don't know if any one has come across this??
I upgraded my Phone to Firmware 3.0, and as usual i cleared all my previous Jailbroken apps, and because i noticed that i had numeric and the battery image in the phones screen i installed another sim card from another carrier, and the phone was still unlocked with firmware 3.0
Hope is of some interest to someone

dont forget when your renaming the file to .ipsw make sure you have your file extensions showing so your just not adding .ispw to the name your changing the actual file

Delete the file you currently have and re-download it from the following source:
iClarified - iPhone - Where To Download iPhone Firmware Files From
Once downloaded (assuming your using Internet explorer or FireFox) you should get an IPSW file not a zip file.
Hope this helpsThere're never enough iPhone Mods

Durrrr me.

Not sure why it is doing this, but no matter where I download the ipsw file, I'm getting it as a .zip file.
I've tried renaming it, and all it does is add .ipsw on the end and stay as a .zip file.
When I go to browse in redsn0w .. it doesn't find it because it is still showing as a .zip file.
Can someone please tell me how in the world do I get it to work? Thanks

Apparently windows 7 doesn't see the ispw file. I ran redsnow, clicked browse and in the firmware folder nothing pops up. Sucks.

make sure the file doesn't have a .zip extension, if it does, rename and delete the .zip
There is another thread here with more comprehensive instructions, try this

what gen iphone you working with, ensure you dl'ed its proper firmware. Make sure you upgrade using itunes 8.2 to 3.0, then run the jailbreak. make sure your run as admin in vista or win7. make sure your ipsw isnt corrupt or incomplete, make sure you extract redsnow and the ipsw into the same folder just in case.
and yea make sure about the .zip file extension thing, to make sure it isnt, go to folder options in windows explorer, then make sure al known file extensions are not hidden.Last edited by Beva922; 06-21-2009 at 07:56 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

My response about .zip was for the other member in the quote.
Pwnage is a strange beast, the thread I gave you has the best trouble shooting that I had read here.
I know you are frustrated, but after a failed attempt, you have to clear with DFU and restore 3.0 and begin the process over. It will work. make sure your on the latest iTunes.
Bare with it, it only works first go for about 50% of the people.
Good luck.

hopefully you're sure about the file extension thing, file size should be 230 mb. Vista is glitchy too sometimes, as I said, run as admin to make sure.
