Stuck trying to restore with numerous errors. Help!

I've been trying to Jailbreak my iPhone 3G for the last 4 hours with no luck. If you could help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Here's the background:
1. I tried jailbreaking with greenpoison, however, it would turn off my phone and freeze my macbook pro. After a few attempts I abandoned this method.
2. I downloaded pwnage tool 4.1.3 and iPhone 4.2.1.ipsw. I used the simple method for pwnage tool and formed a custom restore .ipsw. When pwnage tool prompted me to go into DFU mode, I followed the on screen instructions exactly, but this only turned off my iphone. I, then, downloaded recboot to put the iphone in recovery mode. This was successful, but when I tried to restore from my custom backup the iphone gets stuck preparing to restore (stalls for several minutes then gives error 1604).

If you could help me out of this situation I'd really appreciate it, especially considering my patience is dwindling.
