iphone 3gs modem firmware not upgrading

howdy

i have an iphone 3gs that is currently running 3.1 on modem firmware 05.15.04.. i believe it also has the old bootrom (iboot 359.3)

i have tried countless times using both pwnage and redsnow to upgrade the modem firmware to 06.15.00 so that i can unlock it (it is currently jailbroken)... however... every time i run either software solution the modem firmware always stays at 05.15.04

any help would be greatly appreciated

i am on a mac.. using OS 10.6.5 & itunes 10.1.1 (4)

redsnow:
using the following:
- redsn0w_mac_0.9.6b6
- iPhone2,1_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw

and it usually either freezes when doing a reboot (white screen).. or says waiting for reboot.. yet the iphone has already rebooted and nothing has changed

i have also tried just entering dfu mode using redsnow.. and it usually just races thru each of the stages and then crashes.. pretty much every time

pwnage:
using the following:
- PwnageTool_4.1.3_Unlock_Edition
- iPhone2,1_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw
- iPad1,1_3.2.2_7B500_Restore.ipsw

to build a custom restore ipsw

i then enter dfu mode and restore the custom image in itunes

however... i usually get a "this iphone cold not be restored. an unknown error occurred (1015)".. and leaves the iphone in recovery mode (i use tinyUmberella to get out of recovery mode)

other times i get 1604 messages etc

either way.. the phone appears to have been restored (all my previously installed apps have been removed.. cydia etc installed).. however.. modem firmware has not been upgraded

any help would be greatly appreciated

aim is to get the phone jailbroken and unlocked.. which.. as far as i am aware.. requires the modem firmware upgrade to 06.15

is this such a unique problem that no one has experienced it before.. or has any suggestions

a problem with my phone.. or my computer perhaps?
