can I update to 4.2.1 ?
Hello,
I read several times the dev-team's article but it's rather confusing. I'm not able to determine if there is a way for me to update to 4.2.1.
My config is:
iPhone 3GS
iOS 4.0
Baseband: 04.26.08
Boot Loader version: ICE2_BOOT_06.04_G2M3S2
SHSH from 3.1.3 till 4.1 on Cydia
I would like to update to 4.2.1 only if I can unlock and have an untethered JB.
Is that possible ?
I found this iClarified guides to add a firmware bundle and this one to install 4.2.1 but I'm not sure if this will work for me and preserve my firmware.
Thanks for your help.
PS: I have a mac

You need a custom ipsw to save your baseband

Pwnagetool will create a custom Ipsw file

So you say that I can simply use PwnageTool 4.1.3 to JB my iPhone ? It will preserve my current baseband and will be untethered and unlockable

iPhones produced after week 40 2009 have the new bootrom. I could be slightly out but thats from memory
to find out look at serial number under settings/general/about and if the 4th and 5th number are lower than 40 you have the old boot.

the serial number is
XXX23XXXXXX. I also checked and my IBOOT version is 359.3 (old one)
So I should be able to JB simply as usual:
- get pwnagle tool
- get official 4.2.1
- run pwnagetool on the firmware to create a custom fw
- "option" restore in using iTunes
But what means the dev-team's blog entry :
If you have an old-bootrom 3GS and are already unlockable but want to get to 4.2.1, please wait til we release an “unofficial” bundle for you. Read no further.Last edited by Tex-Twil; 01-13-2011 at 08:59 AM.

ok so I should follow first this tutorial to patch pwnagetool. Can I then simply use it to Jailbreak ?
