Help! Entering DFU mode during Pwnage upgrade maybe have bricked phone
I am running iPhone 3G with 3.1.2. Trying to upgrade to 4.1 using Pwnage tool 4.1.2. I successfully created the custom ipsw but at the end of the DFU process my phone went black and I got a "failed to enter DFU mode" from Pwnage tool, which then proceeds to tell me I "successfully entered DFU mode" (??) I cannot turn the phone back on, using home or power button. If I connect to iTunes, I get a message saying "itunes must check the iphone software update server to identify this device". I can choose "cancel" or "check", but I just choose cancel--too scared to check anything. Running iTunes 10.1, BTW.
Hope my phone isn't bricked--any way out of this? I followed the steps correctly...
Thanks.
OK, if I hold both buttons down again for 8-10 seconds it reboots to normal iPhone mode (since it wasn't in recovery mode--what state was that exactly??)
Anyway, I tried again and it fails to put into recovery mode, just shuts it off so iTunes doesn't recognize it and I have to do a double button restart just to get the phone back and working.
How do I get it in DFU mode since I can't seem to do it with Pwnage Tool?

Reason: Automerged Doublepost
You were in DFU mode if you were able to get out by rebooting. To enter DFU mode, do the following: Turn phone off. Then hold the power button for 3 seconds, continue holding the power button and depress the home button. Hold them both for 10 seconds, then release the power button (which was held for a total of 13 seconds) and continue holding the home button for 30 seconds.
I've done some reading and it seems my phone was in DFU mode (black screen) but iTunes doesn't recognize it and gives me that prompt. (or maybe that prompt is normal, I don't know). I saw with OS 10.5.6 there was an issue where you had to plug the phone into a USB hub--I have 10.6.6. Is that still a fix that might work?
To answer my own question--the error "itunes must check the ipod software update server to identify this device". Was fixed by going into preferences in iTunes and turning on automatic updates.
if u were able to get it back to a normal state then NO, you havent bricked your phone. if u bricked your phone u wouldnt be able to do squat with it except use it as a paper weight. im currently on a 3g running 3.0 trying to custom update to 4.1 to no avail. tried snowbreeze to preserve original baseband but keep getting errors. gona try redsnow now... wish me luck
lol. ok so, i tried redsnow and everything goes well except for the fact that im still on 3.0. wtf?? ive been lookin everywhere and dont want to start a new thread so can anyone please guide me on upgrading from 3.0 to 4.1? im on 4.26.08 bb. thx.
@iwannamod -- If you have a Mac (as you sig suggests) why don't you just use Pwnage Tool 4.1.2? Other than my issue it worked fine. Lots of YouTube vids on how to do this. Note though that it does seem you have to put in DFU mode using Pwnage Tool's assistant.
