I've been trying to jailbreak the official 4.0 firmware, but for some reason I get hung up on the "Preparing iPhone for Restore" screen. My 3GS is indeed the old bootrom and has never been jailbroken with Spirit. At the moment, I am on 3.1.2 jailbroken with blackra!n because I read that if you downgrade to 3.1.2 jailbroken then you can load the 4.0 custom firmware made with Pwnage Tool with no problems. I tried this and got an error. I'm truly stuck and hope someone can help me here.

*UPDATE*
I just tried restoring to 4.0 custom firmware from jailbroken 3.1.2 without putting into recovery mode and it successfully restored jailbroken 4.0. Maybe if you have the same problem as above u can try restore from a normal homescreen state.
