Default PwnageTool Stuck on "Connect Device to USB" screen (help needed)

I am currently trying to jailbreak an Iphone 3GS 3.1.3 with the current PwnageTool 3.1.5 and everything works ok until I get to the screen where it asks if my Iphone 3GS has been Pwned before. After choosing NO it turns to the screen where it states " Connect Device to USB" and it stays there searching... I even went step by step thru the guide just in case I forgot something (since it has been a while since I had to jailbreak)
It does nothing if I disconnect and connect the Iphone.
    Things to note:
1.The cable and usb port work fine. (The Iphone synched fine before all this process and is charging without problems.)
    2. I tried restoring the iphone to see if it helped, but it doesen't
    3. I have created several custom restore ipws in the process trying to figure out what is wrong but I always get stuck in the same screen.

This Iphone was jailbroken before when it had firmware 3.1.2. I had to update to 3.1.3 because of an unfortunate situation and have been running it with apple's 3.1.3 for a while.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You can't jailbreak a 3GS already on 3.1.3 no matter which tool you choose.

You'll need to downgrade, which is only possible if you've saved your SHSH files on Cydia. You can search for guides on how to downgrade on the forum.

    Thank you for your reply.

I was under the impression that you can jailbreak a 3GS on 3.1.3 as long as it is one of the earlier models (which it is). Isn't that what it states in the guide here on Modmyi? Here is an extract from the guide which lists the devices that can be jailbroken and the first on on the list is the one I have:

"Devices that can be Jailbroken following this guide:
iPhone 3GS (OLD BOOTROM ONLY. If the 4th/5th digits of the serial # are before 40 the you should have the old bootrom. If your current jailbreak is tethered DO NOT try this.)"

This is the one I have. The 4th and 5th numbers are 33. It is one of the early 3GS models. Can somebody confirm that this particular model can't be jailbroken?

You need to look a few lines below that. It states something like "Again, this guide is only works if you're previously jailbroken."

Unfortunately, nothing will jailbreak a 3GS once it's on 3.1.3 - the only chance there is, is to downgrade if the 3.1.2 SHSH files are stored on Cydia.

Have similar prop execpt not on version 3.1.3 I Got a brand new 3.1.2/5.11.07 3GS the iPhone Dev Team blog states that Pwnage Tool is safe for 3.1.2/5.11.07 - so I went that route to get 3.1.2 back to stock.

Long story short - error 1600, stuck in DFU mode. Not amount of holding power, or power+home gets me out of if. My only option is a restore to 3.1.3, so I have a rather expensive paperweight until a 3.1.3 fix is put out but i have not done it yet any help would be much appreciated thanks in advance

Since your phone is brand new, it means it also has the new bootrom. New bootrom phones can't accept custom firmwares at all.

I have the exact same problem as the original poster, except I'm on a regular iPhone 3G, not the 3GS!

I've tried alt-clicking the restore button in iTunes in both regular, restore and DFU mode. I've ran through the pwnagetool simple and advanced steps several times and it freezes in "Connect device to USB" mode.

I've tried reconnecting the USB cable, which makes the iPhone beep and iTunes (when it's running) find it.

Though, I've discovered that if I press and hold the power and home buttons for 10 seconds, and then release the power button, pwnagetool sees the iPhone and wants me to prepare to press and hold power and home again. When I follow the rest of the guide I always end up at "Failed to enter DFU mode. Do you like to try again?".
