To update, or not....
I am struggling over whether to update my firmware to a custom v3.1.2 or not. I am currently running v3.0.1 on a model MC149, serial xxx26, bootloader 6.4 and baseband 04.26.08 3GS. I am on Fido in Canada. I am jailbroken with redsn0w, and while not unlocked, I want to keep this option open for the future. I am ECID registred on Cydia since v3.0, and also downloaded my own ECID, and iBEC and iBSS files via the iClarified capture method.
There are some apps that I would like to run that are currently only for v3.1x, although these are not essential. That being said, I suspect that it is only a matter of time before more and more apps will require v3.1x to run.
The dilemma is that short of some newer apps that I can't run, everything else WORKS (tethering, wifi, carrier logos, unsigned .IPCC, push, Bluetooth car audio, etc.). What will v3.1.2 offer me that v3.0.1 does not ? What are the pitfalls or functionality that I loose going to v3.1.2 ?
I am looking for considered and experienced opinions that might assist me in making a decision on whether to stick with v3.0.1 indefinately or move on up to newer custom firmware. Thanks !

Yes, that is actually the case. Custom firmwares bypass the need for signing on already jailbroken phones.
There's no risk to restoring to a 3.1.2 CFW. Since you'll be using a CFW, you won't upgrade the baseband and it'll stay at 04.26.08 unlockable with ultrasn0w.
The only 'bad' things about going to 3.1.2+ is the need for blackra1n/blacksn0w since it can cause wifi issues (and other stuff also, not really sure) but you completely bypass these 'bad' things by using a CFW.
Just to add, even though you can stick with just updating through CFWs, you should still ask Cydia to save your SHSH files, just in case.

There is that app in cydia that fools the app store that your phone is 3.1.3 even though it's 3.1.2 Looks like it has good reviews but I'm afraid to try it, just wanted to throw that in
