PwnageTool 3.1.5 - Do I really need a 555MB root partition?
I noticed the free space on my root partition /dev/disk0s1 is 221MB (SBSettings) or 221,660 1K blocks with Mobile Terminal: (3G, 3.1.2, 4.26.08)
/private/var/mobile$ df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/disk0s1 568320 340980 221660 61% /
devfs 24 24 0 100% /dev
/dev/disk0s2 15290856 6928448 8362408 46% /private/var
It seems most every PwnageTool version is increasing the default root partition size because some are having problems with installation. My situation is just the opposite and I'm wondering what could be done.
I have 9 1/2 pages of Apps (maybe 80% App Store, 20% Cydia), 1200 music files and a host of other crap and consider my iPhone fully loaded. (Note: Not that it matters, but I have yet to add 7ea 2hr movies hence the /var partition is only 46% full).
It just seems that 100MB (maybe 200MB) is forever wasted. I tried to build an IPSW with a smaller root partition, but 555MB (with 3.1.5) is the minimum. Yeaaa, you'll say 'well 100-200MB compared to 16GB is so small, don't sweat it'. I agree -- and I'm really not.
However, it seems logical the next PwnageTool app should allow a bit more flexibility in selecting the root partition size.
555MB is normal. Every firmware seems to get a little bigger in size so it's better to have the program set a minimum rather than risking the install fail just for a few MB worth of space.
