Jailbreaking new 3GS, pwnagetool gives 16xx errors, ireb doesn't work!

I spent the whole day trying to get this working, reading threads, trying new software and solutions and still can't get anywhere.
First off I downloaded pwnagetool and tried to jailbreak that way which either gives 1600 or 1604 errors when installing the custom ipsw.

So having read more it looked like lots of people were having this problem and the solution was to put the iPhone into DFU then use ireb to get past the errors.
I can get the phone into DFU, have installed ireb, but when i select the 3G in ireb is doesnt turn my screen white and doesn't crash ireb (which it is supposed to) so I can't progress...

I've tried all of this on my mac and on my PC and no joy.

My iPhone is new 3GS, 3.1.2, 16GB on O2 UK.

help anyone?

All u have to do is nagivate on on pc to where apple and iTunes download ur firmware
should be something like:
c:drive/user/•username•/app data/roaming/apple computer/iPhone update software/ and place the custom firmware and shift restore

Check your serial number. What are the 4th and 5th digit in it?

In any case, what about all the wifi issues? They don't happen for PwnageTool users.

wifi issues seem to be more related to blacksn0w, rather than blackra1n...

but personally i've never had an issue with blacksn0w... I mean ONE TIME the wifi didn't work even after a reset all network settings, but all i did was restart it, and it works fine since then...

iREB hasn't worked for me either. I also think it screwed up my USB ports but I can't say for sure. I tried it on 2 boxes with different versions of iTunes (8&9) and same result. Then afterwards when I put the phones in DFU, they would go into the mode then cut off and iTunes of course didn't recognize them on either machine. Keep in mine that I tried with 2 different 3G phones running on 3.1.2 deductive reasoning leads me to believe iREB has done something wierd to these computers. I use them all day every day to work with iPhones and no problems til iREB. I'm wonder if maybe I need to reinstall my USB drivers on both boxes. Input would be great.

Wow, I hadn't considered that iReb might be the reason my Vista Ultimate x64 machine "lost" all its USB ports AND my two built-in ethernet controllers.

Fortunately I was able to fix the problem by using System Restore, but you can be damned sure I won't be installing THAT again anytime soon.

So after 2 straight days spent in front of my laptop...I finally give up....my iphone will never successfully Jailbreak....unless any of you guys has a word of wisdom

For blackra1n jailbreak: When the phone restarts and get stuck on the Connect to iTunes logo, simply connect the phone to your computer and run blackra1n again.

At some point, I may try restoring to my old backup from an ipsw of 3.0.1 (which I had successfully jailbroken before all this mess). Of course, given all the problems I had just trying to restore the phoen to factory spec, I'm not sure I'll ever get to that point where I'm ready to try again.

As much as I miss Categories, BiteSMS, SMSettings, and all the other great things about jailbreaking, I need a working phone, and can't afford to take my only phone out of commission for three or four days experimenting.
