After smashing my 2G's face, bought a 3G from a guy who 'did me a favour' by updating to 3.1.2 when he deleted his data.
I have tried several attempts of Pwnage Tool 3.1.4 with 3.1.2 custom ipsw--keep getting iTunes errors. This last was a (9) error. Now a (1604), it wouldn't even get past preparing the software.
I am already choked I can't unlock this phone, but now I can't jailbreak??
Tips?
Thanks. Oh yeah and it wouldn't recognize my SIM card from my 2G. Do I need a specific new SIM?
Mac OS 10.4.11, itunes 9.0.1 (9), iPhone 3G that had 3.1.2 fw.
Ok, after another two attempts, it is functioning with iTunes as a custom 3.1.2 ipsw via iTunes option-restore (after a DFU set with Pwnage Tool).
However, still no service from my sim card.
And it obviously worries me about the update/restore. However--if it works and I can sync...and backup... it is good to go (once I figure out the PHONE portion with the sim card issue). That is, until someone succeeds with 3.1.2 unlock. I have 6-8 months until my local carrier will accept the new iPhone network here so I can switch providers.

Yep. Phone doesn't work in that I can't get service (Rogers in Canada). It is not recognizing my sim card. I was under the impression I take my sim from my old phone (2G), put into new phone. Use.
Not happening.
I'm calling the provider tomorrow and likely will be told I need a new sim or have to activate with that phone (which then makes my old phone dead to me--which isn't what I want---long story).
But I can see the confusion---iTunes recognizes the phone now, whereas before it did not.
I may just keep my old 2G now that I've put a screen protector over the smashed glass and it works just fine other than the cosmetic damage. Locally, there is only one choice for provider for me until summer/fall 2010, so I don't need a LOCKED 3G really at this point.
But the main question is----(now)----am I not just able to pop my existing sim card in and go? Probably not because the provider has no way of knowing if the phone itself is legit?
by not recognizing the sim card do you mean "sim not installed" screen or something like that or its just not activating... I would create a new custom firmware and make sure the activation is checked... also, when u install the custom firmware, you do not have to put the phone in dfu mode (that is why you were originally getting the errors). Just make sure u hold the option key then hit restore to select the custom isp. From what i know, the 2g sim should work as well and should activate your phone.
Well that's just ducky---it appears (I hope!) I've left the sim tray for my 3G at work... I hope.
Pretty small item; sigh.
I don't want to guess at what it said, will post back when I can. But I'm pretty sure I had activated checked but not jailbroken on the PwnageTool software.
Anyway, talk later...when I track down the sim card tray...
