does my current firmware version have to equal the custom firmware version?

i have a 3GS 3.0.1, never pwned

can i create a custom firmware with 3.1.2 and use that to restore?
i assume that is the same thing as jailbreaking and getting an upgrade to 3.1.2 all at the same time?

or do i have to make custom firmware at 3.0.1 first and then at 3.1.2?

You can be at 3.0.1 and restore to a custom 3.1.2 firmware.
