Default iPhone 2G without a power button

Hi everyone, I am usually always helping people out but for this one, I prefer to ask before taking the challenge. My brother in law has a 2G iPhone and his power button is broken. Hence, he cannot put his phone in DFU. He is still using 1.1.3. My wife's 2G is @ 3.0 but to put the 3.0 and get it to install properly, the first time I put the phone in DFU and got an error. Rebooted the phone and came back to the home screen on 2.2.1 I then clicked "ALT+Restore" and picked the pwned 2G 3.0 firmware and everything worked.

So my question becomes, can I take a 2G iphone on 1.1.3 and simply ALT+RESTORE and pick the file and bring it up to 3.0 or do I absolutely need the DFU mode since this phone has never been pwned?

    Thanks for your answers.

    Jon

Is he lookin to jailbreak it or just upgrade it? Dont think you need DFU to just upgrade it.

He has a 2G iphone in Canada. Hence, it needs to be jailbroken and unlocked.
