can't update to 2.2.1, compatability issue in itunes

i'm running itunes 8.2.0.23 and running 2.0.2 on my iphone, i tried going upto 2.2.1 and itunes won't let it as it says the file is not compatible, what do i do?

return back your iTunes 8.1.1 then try again restoring your OS 2.2.1 ...
