Help With Restoring iPod Touch

My brother just messed up his iPod Touch while jailbreaking it (apparently he doesn't know whether he used the 1st gen or 2nd gen jailbreak, but his iPod is 1st gen). When I turn it on, nothing appears on the screen (and yes, it is charged). When I plug it into my computer in restore mode, the plug the iPod into the computer picture shows, but disappears as soon as I click restore in iTunes.

After it shows the "Preparing iPod for restore" message for a while, it gives an error: "Unknown error: 1604".

How do I restore the iPod for him?

if anyone knows of a fix for this issue (when DFU mode doesnt work also) then it would be appreciated. I was trying to fix a mates 2nd gen iPod Touch (unjailbroken) and always got errors halfway through restoring
