Loosing 500mb space when upgrading ? How to get it back ?
So I heard that if people with a jailbroken iphone 3g fw2.1 clicks update and updates to fw2.2 they will loose approx 500mb (depending on how many cydia and installer apps they got?)
Well people told me to use the Restore button instead of the update button.
So I clicked restore, and it automatically did the whole restoration process and after restoring it was fw2.2 , i was suprised and happy.
Then came the backup.(just to get all my contacts back)
and after the backup , i checked my iphone. It was 2.2 freshly restored. However, there was a problem. There were approx 532 mb of data in the "others" category. I therefore, on my own risk, decided to click restore again (lol..) . And then the "others" data went down to 357mb.
So how can I get back the full capacity of my iphone ?
Is there a way to completely wipe out all data on my iphone but keep my contacts, sms. ??
I know on the bigboss guide it talks about how to use aptbackup to backup ur apps and get them. So that u dont loose 500mb. But i dont want to backup those apps.
What i would like is to get a
iphone 3g to firmware 2.2
-full capacity
-backed up sms.contacts.
So yeah.. @_@ help would be awesome.. thanks guyz and gals

the "other" space used is cydia and small background apps used for the processing of things (including cydia) so to get rid of it you would have to not have cydia.
Being an i can be a lot of pressure. you have to live right up to the small point.

but mines not jailbroken yet. @_@ it was at 2.1 , but then now its not
so basically
i updated my jail broke iphone 3g fw2.1 to
iphone 3g fw2.2 fresh
and in the process of doing so I lost some capacity.
I have read guides that showed me how not to loose 500mb when upgrading, yet i still did. So.. its there a way to clean out that excess stuff thats been left over from previous cydia.Last edited by virgozero; 01-14-2009 at 06:30 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Perform a DFU restore not a regular restore.
It will take care of the space issue.
download 2.2 firmware and save it to your desktop or where you want.
(just in case)
to get in DFU mode
with the phone plugged into the usb and itunes running
hold down the power and home button until the screen goes dark.
release the power button, keep holding the home button and watch itunes.
itunes should say your phone is in restore mode ...blah.blah.
the screen should be black as if the phone is off.
Hold shift key and click restore button(option restore on a mac) and pick your firmware you downloaded.
that should take care of your space problem.Yeah I'm an iPhoneaholic!! So What!!!
