im getting pretty agravated at this point. i've searched this entire site and all of google(seemingly lol). i've created the pwnage folder on my desktop, i've downloaded quickpwn and extracted the contents into the pwnage folder. now, i already have 2.2 installed from apple( got my i fone 3 jan 2008). do i need the restore file? if so, what do i do from here? i'm usually very technologically advanced, but im pretty much stumped here-i havent worked with apple a whole lot lol. thanks in advance for any help given, im new to this site, but i can see there are ALOT of friendly/helpful people and links on here.

Your going to have to re break your phone. You will come to the partition screen, slide the arrow to the right. I read somewhere between 500 and 1100. This is what I did.
Also there seems like link between kate (in installer) and the phone losing dialing properties. I had the same exact problem your having. I completely restored my phone to stock and still have not re JB it yet!

When I was first into jailbreaking, I think the first few upgrades took me at least 3 tries to get everything working well. I never used Kate, but Ihad all kinds of issues with Intelliscreen so i did rejailbreak, just never reinstalled Intelliscreen. I know many people use it without a problem but I wasnt that interested in it anyway so I never took the time to work it out.
What I have learned in my 1+ year of jailbreaks of various firmwares and platforms, is that it isnt necessarily the jailbreak itself that causes issues, Its what you do afterwards while setting up the iPhone. My feeling is that when installing apps, it is extremely important to wait for the little spinning wheel up in the status bar to stop before doing anything else, not even clicking the "return to Cydia" button. It also helps to do a full power off/on reboot even if you don't "have to" after the installation of mobilesubstrate apps. I also make a habit of not trying to install more than a few apps (2 or 3 at most) at a time before exiting out of Cydia completely and going back in. As long as I do this, my phone seems to work flawlessly.
If I've helped you, you can help me by clicking on that Thanks button.
