This error means that your ipsw file is corrupted. If you downloaded it from the net, try downloading it again.
To check if it is corrupted, rename the extension to .zip and open it with winzip.
If it doesn't open/extract, it is corrupted.Last edited by captainjapanicq; 01-01-2009 at 08:45 AM.

^^ Thanx. but my iTunes is the latest 8.0.2. My itunes always recognizes my iphone and sync apps and all other stuff properly. over the past year i have been upgrading firmware from 1.1 all the way to 2.1 now. it is only this time that any such error message is coming up and i am completely unable to solve it.

You're just trying a regular restore right? Not a restore to a custom 2.2 firmware?

i thot so too. so i downloaded the ipsw from 3 different sites. all with the same result.
no customs. just a regular restore.
everytime i get the msg. "An unknown error occured (1403)"
P.S.: I have also tried re-restoring to 2.1 and then immediately updating to 2.2 on a clean phone. still the same error.

thanx all guys for ur suggestions. they say 3 times is lucky but in my case it was 6-7 times. after downloading the ipsw from almost 4 different sites i finally managed to download a firmware file which actually worked and i was finally able to update my iphone. YEH!!
i have no idea why but the firmwares on other sites (even reputed ones) were creating problems.
