I Give Up

I just spent a LOT of time turning my 3G into an iPod. I had my phone set up so nice, with all sorts of great apps, all neatly put away in Categories folders. Now I have a phone that says it'd running 2.2 firmware that I successfully pwnaged.......BUT NO CARRIER. Without a carrier, i'm dead in the water.
So....it's back to pwnaged 2.1, and I will have to set the whole damn phone up from scratch! I can't believe no one else ran into this problem. There are only 2 other posts on this forum, with only a few not too helpful replies. The people i'm the most pissed with (even though they break their butts, and do great work for no pay) is the folks over at the pwnage Dev Group. If you check the blog, there is no mention of the pwned 2.2 breaking network connectivity!!!
Oh well, live and learn. I will NEVER rush into upgrading to a new firmware (especially since it only offered a few lame "improvements) again.
Thanks for reading what turned into my RANT

Yes. I'm on ATT. Just finished building and restoring a custom pwned 2.1, and now IT wont find the network. I am probably never going to want to use this phone on another carrier, so I think I will let iTunes run an UPGRADE to 2.2, and then QuickPwn it to a jailbroken 2.2 I realize this will update the baseband, so hmy phone will probably never be able to be software unlocked in the future. Oh well....this all gave me a headache.

I think you forgot to uncheck the activation process when you built your ipsw.

I thought about that.....I don't remember seeing that option this time though. I selected Expert, downloaded a bunch of packages, clicked build, and that was it.
I think now that I restored with an "official" Apple .ipsw (actually i'm STILL in the process) my only choice is to use QuickPwn (not Pwnage) to jailbreak the phone.

If you used the pwnage tool to make a custom IPSW file, why not try to go to 2.2 and then use QuickPwn. That way your phone is flashed and activated and you then can jailbreak it.
Only reason not to go this way would be if you want to use your phone on another network in the near future but if you are on a legit iPhone contract, you should be fine since you are on that for 2 years.

boxxa hit it right on the head. I have a funny feeling pwnage 2.2 wasn't quite ready for prime time yet. Bhz1....what is the exact release # for the pwnage you used? ecasillas....that's exactly what happened to me. I ended up doing what boxxa suggested in the second post, and everything is fine now. The only "problem" is I have now probaly given up the ability to soft unlock my phone in the future. Not a problem for me because ATT owns me for another 2 years anyway.

I used Pwnage 2.2. Forgive me for beeing a bit dense if I cant find additional release info. I've been a PC person since 1982. Ive only had a Mac for a few weeks. SO far I really like Pwnage. I happened to see the activation box before i made the custon firmware and knew enough from past experience with Winpwn that as an ATT customer i did not want activation set.

If I've helped you, you can help me by clicking on that Thanks button.

ecasillas....which ver and platform did u use? What did u use iclarified for? (i'm guessing for the mobileinstallation patch). I'm starting to think all these problems with the 2.2 pwnage upgrade might be Mac specific.....;-(
ecasillas....by using QuickPwn u gave up the opportunity to soft unlock your phone in the future. If your on ATT it prob dsnt matter for u anyway. I ended up doing the same thing after a night of frustration with pwnage 2.2 for Mac. What platform r u using? I think this might turn out 2 b a Mac pwnage software problem.... :-(
bhz1....man do I feel like an idiot. I guess I was so tired and pissed off at 3AM that I never saw the option to activate. As an ATT customer I can see why my custom .ipsw wouldn't work if i forgot to uncheck that box! So out of frustration I ended up just using QuickPwn and forfeiting the chance for a future soft unlock from the Pwnage team. Oh well, at least i'm fast becoming an expert in all things iPhone.... ;-)Last edited by macperry; 11-24-2008 at 02:58 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost
