I had this problem too, what I did is download the original apple iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw its for 3g, and in itunes (windows) hit shift and click restore, this will bring up a search for any ipsw file, find the one mentioned and click open. this will restore it to 2.1 and then you can jailbreak it again with QuickPwn if you do not want 2.2.

What's causing this is the No Activation hack, let iTunes activate your iPhone and you should get service.
To fix this, restore back to the original Firmware 2.1, update to 2.2 and quickpwn the firmware with the Activation hack unchecked. Or use PwnageTool and make a Custom Firmware with the Activation hack unchecked and let iTunes activate your iPhone.

If you wanted to update to 2.2 all you would have to do is update it through itunes to 2.2 and then folow the guide I posted above. If you want to go back to 2.1, do what I posted above that because itunes will restore it back to 2.2 now that its updated.

The issue with excepting 2.2 is the baseband update, this is said to make it unlockable until a fix comes out, if your on at&t who cares just jailbreak it.
I didnt read about that, how does that happen?Last edited by kdcom; 11-23-2008 at 03:21 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Thx kdcom, I followed the iClarified link (for mac) you provided above and got everything working fine; jailbroken with 2.2. My concern was using iTunes to upgrade while on a JB 2.1. I ended up loading the Apple 2.1, upgrading to 2.2 in iTunes, and finally using QuickPWN.

No Service after 2.2 update on iPhone 3g
Hi there,
I too have updated to firmware 2.2 by using Pwnage Tool. However, now when I turn my iphone on I get reception for about 5 seconds and then it reverts to no service, so I can't call or txt. Wifi still works fine. I have done all manner of restores - downgrading to 2.1 and 2.0 with no luck. I am now stuck with a very expensive ipod touch! Please help meeeeeeee!

Everything worked after I updated my iPhone firmware from my jailbroken 2.1 to the Apple standard 2.2 (using iTunes). After I saw that I was good-to-go with the regular 2.2 and my service was back, I re-jailbroke my iPhone and all was well again. Keep in mind this may hinder you from unlocking your iPhone in the future.
