    Default Can't PWN 3G w/iTunes8.0.1 (11) on a Mac G5

I have a pwnd 3G that developed crashing apps so I decided to re-pwn the phone.
In trying to re-Pwn I keep getting error messages from iTunes 8.0.1 saying that it cannot restore the phone with the pwnd firmware. It will restore the phone with the stock Apple iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_Restore firmware, so I've got a working phone but I'd love to get my Cydia apps back again.
I tried using QuickPwn but that says that it does not support the firmware installed on my 3G...
I'm running iTunes 8.0.1 (11) on a Mac G5 - latest Leopard version. I'd read that 8.0.1 (12) shipping on the new Mac Books won't allow Pwning and I guess that version (11) is the same.
I found a copy of iTunes 7.7 and installed that, after removing the 8.0.1 prefs and iTunes library, but iTunes 7.7 wouldn't even mount the iPhone.
An iTunes error message said that I needed iTunes 8 to mount the phone.
Are there more system files for iTunes that I should remove to get iTunes 7.7 to mount the phone?

    Any info appreciated.
