Bad experience with pwnage and 3g, but a solution.....
I couldn't manage to get pwnage CFW to take to my neighbors 3g iphone under any circumstances. (works great on my 2g) Every time I'd try iTunes would kick out a different error.
After a lot of curse words I booted up VMware and ran the latest quickpwn. It says "do not run in virtualized environments" when you turn it on, but being one to piss in the wind I did it anyway and it worked FLAWLESSLY.
Didn't have to go into iTunes and activate like I would have with pwnage, in fact it was almost too easy. Just click and BOOM.... jailbroken with Cydia instantly, no re-activation needed or anything.

Main point though, it will run in a virtual environment.
