successful Pwn 2.1!!
I got a successful pwn of fw 2.1. I know people have been having problems, and I was reluctant. But I just said the heck with it and did it last night.
The whole thing, beginning to end, took about 30-40 minutes. The time it took me to grill and eat my dinner.
--have a AT&T iPhone 2g, pwned 2.0.1, used new pwnagetool 2.1
brief description:
on a MBP, did the software update. updated os x to 10.5.5 and itunes to version 8 among some other things. let that finish
opened itunes and made sure that it was update to itunes 8
then did a back up of my phone
followed the iphone 3g os x instructions on this site
after the b/u, opened the new pwnagetool 2.1
used expert mode, built custom fw
answered "yes" to having been pwned before
put phone into restore (not dfu) mode like instructions stated
itunes recognized that and then alt (option) clicked on custom fw on desktop
let it do its thing restoring
(i hadnt done this before) but restored my phone in itunes from the backup that i created at the beginning.
it worked like a charm. all my apps, recent calls, voice messages, text msg and everything else was still there. pretty sweet for me.
If anybody has any questions about what i did or something to help you, just let me know. I will help if i can.

You said that you followed the 3g instructions but you have a 2g, is this correct?
What firmware did you have before you started to jailbreak your phone?
I have a 2g with firmware 2.1 and I tried jailbraking from 2.02 to 2.1 with problems, so finally when I got my phone back, I updated to the apple Itunes version.
Thank you
Mario

just like JazJon said. yes you can still use the apps from apple store and access the appstore
yes youtube is working like a charm
just like JazJon said, you get the best of both worlds. you get the appstore apps and then jailbroken apps too.
yes that is correct, i have a 2g iPhone, but the instructions are pretty much the same.
i had pwned it to fw 2.0.0 then they came out with an update to the fw, so I pwned it to that version fw which i thought was fw 2.0.1 then last night, pwned it to fw 2.1
have you pwned your iPhone before?Last edited by mroof1; 09-17-2008 at 04:20 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Yes, I have pwned a few times and I always have issues with DFU. I will give it another try. Thank you

Ok well let me know how it works.
I did not use DFU mode. I just used restore mode. Which I am not totally sure but from what I have read, there is definitely a difference in the two.
I used these instructions from the website:
Pwnage 2.x Guide 3G - ModMyi - Wiki
In there it stated toward the bottom, after creating custom fw, to just put into restore mode (not dfu mode). Try that and see if it works, if you have not already gotten it to work.
Hope that helps.

Do you loose your unlock when you upgrade and use pwnage.
