Can't send email

Everything was rosy with the new 3G firmware until I discovered that I can't send email through my verizon account.
I can send with my .mac account.
I tried loading the unpwnd iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136 firmware onto the phone, same problem.

I just loaded the previous firmware version - but now that won't send email
I get the error mess: "Cannot Send Mail. The sender address was invalid."

Does the new Baseband trump the previous version?
Verizon won't answer my calls so I don't know if it's their problem or the iPhone - I was able to send email with my 2G phone using WiFi...

Any info appreciated.
