I always make sure iv backed the phone up in itunes before i restore or jailbreak. must have erased all data from my phone about 15 times in the year iv had it and not once have i lost any contacts.

how do i back them up in itunes do i need mobile me?

Your contacts should already be on your computer, how else did you get them on your phone? Im on a mac so if thats what your on you just put them into your Address book which is where they come from when you sync your phone to your computer. Not sure where they are stored if you are on Windows.
