Reboot the computer, Re-pwn with a different usb port in DFU mode. That might work.
Or...do a factory restore with 2.0.2 first just so that you have 2.0.2 on the phone....then do another restore with the custom firmware afterward.

Is it a 3G or first Gen?
You cannot unlock 3G yet. Hopefully soon.

hmmmm....ok...might have to mess around with iTunes.
Completely uninstall iTunes...trash them..even the execution file.
Go to Apple site, download the fresh new iTunes app...and reinstall it.
Btw, if you already have 2.0.2 on the phone...then all you need to do is download the actual 2.0.2 fw for first gen...and use this to make your custom fw...then restore your phone with the custom fw that you just built.

This happened to me and I had to uninstall all apple stuff (iTunes, Quicktime, etc etc) reinstall them and then use OEM firmware through iTunes in DFU mode before I could re-try the pwning.

1604 error....reboot computer, and use a different usb port. Start the DFU mode and restore again.
I know, it's a pain..but you have to be patient.

See if that will work.
