I have a redsnow tethered jailbreak, do I need to restore before using rc5?

I would because it is bad practice to jailbreak over a jailbreak.

I didn't. I'm using an iPhone 4 that was tethered JB with redsn0w. I ran greenpois0n over it and I've had no problems at all.

One curious thing, though, that I noticed yesterday: When I logged into my AT&T account, it shows my phone as an iPhone 3G, whereas it used to show it as an iPhone 4 32GB, which is what it is. Other than that, I've not noticed any other problems.

Always best to start fresh before jailbreaking but I have heard quite a few people using greenpoison over a redsnow tethered jailbreak to untether.

I haven't run gp yet, cydia isn't showing anything except main screen, is there server down? can I run gp on another computer that my phone has never been connected to

I dont think cydia's server is down. Yes you can run greenpoison on a different computer.

may be a stupid question but does iTunes need to be updated to run gp, my computer is down that's y I'm using a dif one....I just don't want to lose everything that is on my phone

greenpoison doesnt need any firmware with it to run.

after I updated and jailbroke with Greenpois0n.

i cannot for the life of me get this to to work. I had to replace my iphone bc of a broken button so i got the most recent update. Tried to jailbreak but after I get into dfu mode and hit jailbreak it intantly says jailbreak failed..

How do you guys make your phone untethered from tethered?
I already use greenpois0n after JB w/ redsn0w just as mentioned on this forum, but I kept getting the same failed message on my greenpois0n button and the phone is still tethered.

I restored to custom firmware then ran gp5 haven't had any problems yet
