Default Problems with Jailbreaking using blackra1n

I was really hoping to hop on the "we love geohot" bandwagon. Unfortunately my first encounter with blackra1n RC3 (supposedly the easiest thing since your mother) did not go so geo hot.

I have the latest version of iTunes (9.0.2). I have the latest firmware for the iPhone 3G (3.1.2). I have downloaded blackra1n RC3. I executed it from the folder in which it was downloaded, then clicked "make it ra1n". My iPhone shut off, the apple logo shut off, it went in to the "Connect to iTunes" screen; while blackra1n was so happy to tell me all went well and where I could donate, it also said that I was to wait for it to reboot. After 15 minutes of waiting, I figured there was something wrong (this is the 30 second solution for jailbreaking keep in mind). Now I'm here. On the internet. Searching for an answer. None to be found for my situation.

    All responses are welcome.

I had the same problem. I get the connect to itunes screen and no reboot. When I reboot it I get an unjailbroken phone again. The only way I can do it is use my neighbors PC.

When I use my iBook with 10.4.11, iTunes 9 and my release week iPhone 3Gs....no luck.

Anybody have any advise other than use a PC.

iPhones that were produced after week 40 some week 41 and 42 i read have the new iboot. That shouldnt affect your jb tho, it affects when your phone boots up and if you have it then youll have to have a tethered jb. Otherwise its an untethered jb. Try and diffrent usb port, diffrent computer, try reinstalling a fresh copy of 3.1.2. If you have a the new iboot you might have to click make it rain once it reboots with the computer.

Try and restore it with iTunes. From what i learned over the weekend you hold the home button and while holding the home button plug it in the computer, and keep on holding it until iTunes detects iPhone in recovery mode. From there restore with a fresh copy of 3.1.2. And try again with blackra1n.

I forgot to add, if you have the new bootrom, you have to run blackra1n twice. Once to jailbreak it. A second time to jailbreak it because of the reboot.

Blackra1n will jailbreak ALL 3gs phones. The difference is whether or not you have the new bootrom. So someone mentioned the production week, but they only had it half right. Phones with a serial number that has a 4th digit that is the number 4 has the new bootrom. Again, blackra1n will jailbreak it but you have to run it twice.

After running it twice you'll have to run it again (once) each time your reboot. This is called a tethered jailbreak. There is no way around it at this time. Running blackra1n again after a reboot does nothing in terms of wiping your apps, contacts, themes, etc. It will look the same as it did before the reboot.

I hope that clears it up some.

I am having the same problem. Up to now most of the comments concerning the use of blackra1n to jailbreak iphones running os 3.1.2 seemed to be favorable. However suddenly in the past two days many complaints similar to yours have begun to appear. I downloaded os 3.1.2 in the past few days. Could it be that the latest versions of os 3.1.2 contain something that disables blackra1n? Does anyone have any thoughts concerning this idea?

I tried doing that too.. even when i didnt know it was called tethered jailbreaking... i did notice that it jailbreaks it twice. I do have the new bootrom. so what i did is this

on the iphone 3G S 16GB, i hit make it ra1n and it comes up with the message saying that your phone has been jailbroken. Then it reboots, and i see the "message saying that your phone has been jailbroken" again. and it runs fine. I installed cydia and other applications on cydia then it reboots. But this time it stucks on the "connect to itunes" screen or DFU mode. Then i tried to run Blackra1n and then its jus stuck so i have to restore it back to the factory default FM 3.1.2 original.

    any other way around it???????????????????

It really has nothing to do with the people updating to 3.1.2 in the last few days. It's either you have the new bootrom (4th digit of 4) or you don't (4th digit of 3).

If you have the new bootrom you have a tethered jailbreak. This means that the initial jailbreak will have to be run twice. The first time you run blackra1n it jailbreaks your phone. However since the first time you jailbreak requires a reboot, the phone will hang upon reboot. This means you have to RERUN blackra1n a second time.

Once you run it a second time you're good for this jailbreak.

The tethered jailbreak means you have to run blackra1n EVERY time you reboot but only once since you already did it twice in a row in the step above.

At this point, there is nothing you can do to change a tethered jailbreak into an untethered jailbreak.

well my friend bought iphone 3GS with bootrom/serial # xxx41xx and it works fine.

yeah i tried running blackra1n at the reboot but then it just stucks at the geo hot splash screen... and doesnt go on... i tried running it few times still it doesnt work.

i also tried unistalling the blackra1n after installing cydia and still it stucks at the reboot the third time.

i guess i will jus have to wait untill the unthetered jailbreak for the newer bootrom comes out.

ok i get it we have to run blackra1n twice, i think we are all understanding that part. what i dont get is if the iphone doesnt reboot itself and we have to manualy reboot do we still have to run blackra1n a second time? because we do and again we get blank screen no geohot image and have to reboot manually etc etc etc etc

I JBed my 3gs on 3.1.2 with the geohot's blackra1n and it worked perfectly like it advertised..

However today I decided to take on the task of updating and jailbreaking my friend's 3g iphone,I JB before on 3.0 and it was no problem, and here it is 9:18 and I started this adventure at 4.
I gaveup on blackra1n, I'm resorting to using a custom firmware..never done this method before..
    but like others have reported...

I would run blackra1n, it would stick the 3g into recoverymode (with the OE screen, not geohots face) and the phone would go black and not reboot till I manually did it.
    And no jailbreak.
Closed down all sorts of background processes, tried DFU mode..etc..so far NOTHING.

I pray this custom firmware works.

Well, that custom firm-ware didnt end up working...
So now there is this other method of restoring using itunes and a different custom firmware...

    yippie...what fun

    Wellp,

    giving up for tonight...

    his phone kicked my a55...

MC Models are not unjailbreakable! Models begging with MC simply mean your jailbreak will be tethered. This meaning that every time your iPod reboots you must plug it back into your computer and Run Blackra1n again. If you need more help you can go find tutorials on this website or go to mine http://www.podzombie.com/2009/10/jai...-1-2-firmware/ Most of the time blackra1n errors can be fixed by changing usb ports or force quitting services like MDNS Responder etc...

Default Its USB speed that stops Blackra1n

I couldnt get blackra1n to work on my iphone 3G or 3GS but that was because i changed my bios and my USB was running at 1.1 I went back into my bios and restored back to 2.0 (enhanced) speed. All PC's built after 2003 will have 2.0 on at least front or back if not both ports. After making them 2.0 Blackra1n went through instantly.

I have MC model and its untethered.
    my iboot is 359.3
    build week 47

there is a 1 in 2 chance that you iphone will be untethered like mine even if it is MC model and a late build week, my friend has week 43 and is tethered mine is 4 weeks older and is untethered. It depends on who makes your phone as different factories turn them out at different speeds. So even though my iphone was produce 4 weeks later the parts used were still older. So the only true way of knowing if you have the tethered jailbreak or not is the iboot. 359.3 is untethered 359.3.2 is tethered.
best buy second hand or ask for the back with the most dust on it

I've tried running blackrain back to back but it still don't work. I run it again after the jailbreak is done thing pops up. I don't have an iPhone. I have an iPod touch 2g 8gb. Model mc.

    thanks ryantcb,
I am getting the nerve up to Jailbreak. I find conflicting info on if my iphone will end up being the tethered or untethered after blackra1n. I have MC but week 33. How did you identify what iboot version you have. That seems to be the true way to tell in advance if you will end up tethered vs. untethered. My main concern is being able to undo the jailbreak if I want to and not lose any data/settings. I have not really found a step by step for that. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Here's my problem: I do the whole process of jailbreaking it with blackra1n and it does it's thing. I turn my iTouch off and try to turn it back on but it says on the screen that has the itunes logo with the white arrow and the USB connection port. Has anyone found a solution for this problem??? >.<
