Jailbroken 3.1.2 can you tether by editing carrier files on iphone?

The big question is can you tether on 3.1.2 by editing the carrier files?

I know you can't load in custom carrier under 3.1.x but I assume if its jailbroken you can edit the files on the iphone.

Can anyone confirm this?

I successfully jailbroke 3.1.2 with blackra1n and am also interested in tethering now.

Is there an app that lets you edit carrier files?

I tried the help.benm.at/help.php custom carrier profiles, but they didn't work.

Editing the carrier files won't help. The APNs in the carrier files are signed now. So someone needs to patch out the sig check for them.

Great I can see that is going to be no quick fix.

I always used to edit my files (there is a windows program that converts them, you edit and puts them back into the binary format.)

I had seen in the latest AT&T files on the iPhone that I edited to add in so you can edit them this new 'signature' field.

So your saying that even editing them won't work as the iPhone is checking the signatures?

I thought they were only checked as the ipcc is loaded on.

I am talking about editing the actual carrier.plist file on the iPhone (editing the stock ones) not trying to load in a ipcc.

I am not upgrading to 3.1.2 until I know tethering is possible.

If the individual carrier.plist files are being checked I don't see a fix. Unless the algorithm is known you can't fake signatures.

And then it will mean the firmware needs patching to stop checking signatures.

^ yea its going to have to happen on a jailbreak level. Check out the new APNs and you will see the signatures. I can make the toggle appear for tethering but when it is enabled, the sig gets checked and kills the toggle

Thanks stealthbravo, at least now I know to stay well away from 3.1.2 until this is solved.

It sucks as my iPhone 3GS is unlocked but I need tethering.

Damn apple to hell as any mobile can tether. Surely it should tether by default rather than not, but knowing AT&T how they remove the editing feature you know they would pull that too.

Yeah the jailbreak tether apps suck compared to the "official" version. I'm kicking myself for updating to 3.1.

You can't go back to 3.0.1? Luckily my keys are on cydia but until tethering is fixed I am staying here on 3.0.1 as I agree factory tether rocks!

Its really not a big deal. There are many people working on a binary patch at the moment. We will have tethering on 3.1+ soon.
