Blackra1n - restore or upgrade from 3.0

I have an iPod touch 2g running jailbroken fw 3.0, wondering if I can simply upgrade the firmware through itunes to 3.1 and then run blackra1n and have everything basically as it is currently setup on my iPod or if a fresh install is required.
