[GUIDE] Starting from Scratch - Modding Using iBrickr for 1.0.1 - 1.0.2

starting from scratch
a tutorial for windows users

This tutorial will teach you how to do the following:
Upgrade from 1.0.1 to 1.0.2
Use iBrickr to jailbreak the phone with iTunes 7.4
Install Installer.app
Install SSH to use with Winscp

System:
Windows XP SP2
iTunes 7.3.2.6
iPhone 1.0.1 (this will be upgraded to 1.0.2 during this tutorial)

Programs:
iBrickr v0.8 (http://cre.ations.net/creation/ibrickr)
dropbear pxl package (http://pxl.googlecode.com/files/dropbear-0.49.pxl)
binkit pxl package (http://pxl.googlecode.com/files/binkit-0.6.pxl)
winscp (http://winscp.net/eng/download.php)

Resources:

There is a video on this exact process by natetrue: http://cre.ations.net/creation/ibrickr

Step 1
Dock your iphone

Step 2
Launch iTunes and sync your iphone

Step 3
At this point what I did was update my iphone from software version 1.0.1 to 1.0.2.
-click update in the iphone summary tab next to version
-follow the on screen instructions
-your phone should say Software Update
-then it will say Please Connect to iTunes
-IF PREVIOUSLY MODDED IT WILL ASK YOU TO RESTORE (this would be the same as holding power and home restore)
-click ok
-the iPhone window will have the upgrade button faded and the restore button highlighted, click on the restore button
-wait for the iPhone Sofware Update to download (mine took 12 minutes)

At this point I would like to note that i had several error messages about iphone cannot be restored , error -50 and some other errors, however, my phone could still see iTunes, so when it denied my restore, i clicked the restore button again, and again until it restored my phone.

-once the restore kicks in it should 'extract' the iphone files, and then say looking for iphone and restoring iphone, verifying iphone software (on your computer) this took around 2-5 minutes
-after its done it should give you a message saying that your iphone has been restored, please keep it connected, so thats what i do.
-it will then activate the phone and you get the nice earth picture and it will say on your iphone, iphone is activated, and iTunes should see your phone again.
-at this point i will REFRAIN from restoring my backup because this is NOT the point i want to do that at.
-undock the iphone and continue to step 4

You can also hold power and home until you get the connect to itunes screen and do a complete restore of your phone.

This process may vary for everyone depending on your version of iPhone, but what I recommend is that you get a FRESH / CLEAN restore of your phone before attemping hacking your iPhone. You dont "have" to, but it is recommended.

These two processes give you the same result, just make sure your version of iPhone is at 1.0.2

Step 4 (make sure your phone is disconnected from itunes at this point)
Upgrade your iTunes to 7.4
(please see apples website for more information on upgrading to iTunes 7.4)

Step 5
after the update,
Close iTunes and Restart your computer

Step 6
Dock your iphone

Step 7
Restore your iphones previous settings
Click the image to open in full size.

Click the image to open in full size.
Step 8
Your phone should restart, you will need to re-enter any wifi or voicemail passwords.

Step 9
Close iTunes and iTuneshelper.dll from the process list
-hold ctrl + shift + esc
-click on iTunesHelper.exe
Click the image to open in full size.
-click on End Process

Step 10
Download ibrickr

Step 11
Run ibrickr.exe
Click the image to open in full size.

Step 12
Click on the Free iPhone button
Click the image to open in full size.

Step 13
Follow the onscreen instructions
"Restart your iPhone in Restore Mode"
-with your iphone docked
-hold down power until the red slider appears, and slide it to turn it off
-as soon as the grey Apple logo shows up, hold both power and home buttons until the yellow triangle appears
-your phone should now be free!
Click the image to open in full size.

Step 14
Now to install PXL
Click on the Applications button
Click the image to open in full size.

Step 15
Follow the on screens instructions
-restart your phone by pressing the power button until the red slider appears and then slide
-press the power button to start phone up again
-once your phone restarts, press the continue button (on the computer in ibrickr)
Click the image to open in full size.
-restart your phone, again
-click on check for PXL

Step 16
Now to install Installer.app
Click on Browse application
Click the image to open in full size.

Step 17
Click on Installer vX.XX
Click the image to open in full size.

Step 18
Click back
Click the image to open in full size.

From here if you click on installer application on your iphone, you can install any application, simply and easily.

Step 20
Installing SSH bin kit
Download dropbear and binkit

Step 21
Click on Install PXL package
Click the image to open in full size.

Step 22
Find your dropbear pxl package that you downloaded and click open
Click the image to open in full size.

Step 23
Let your phone soft reboot (you do not have to do anything, wait for a tone notification from your phone when completed)

Step 24
Click Back to app list

Step 25
Click on Install PXL package
Click the image to open in full size.

Step 26
Find your binkit pxl package that you download and click open
Click the image to open in full size.

Step 27
Let your phone soft reboot (you do not have to do anything, wait for a tone notification from your phone when completed)

Step 28
Click Back to app list

You can now use winscp to transfer files and such on to your iphone.
quick winscp tutorial:
-download and install winscp
-run winscp
-click new
-hostname = ip address of your iphone on the wifi
-port number = 22
-username = root
-password = dottie
-private key file = (do not put anything here)
-file protocol = SCP
-click save

Things you are now able to do:
Install ringtones using ibrickr
Install applications using Installer.app
Install anything else using winscp to transfer files

Hope this helps everyone out there... another piece of quick information, for those who want to 'jailbreak' their phone using jailbreak and are having trouble with the holding power and home until...etc.etc., try this:

-close itunes
-undock phone
-hold power and home until the connect to itunes yellow triangle appears
-dock phone
-close itunes (if it starts up)
-run jailbreak.exe

I found this way to be most effective and I had to do nothing... but wait. Hope that helps.

yes, if do you have regular jailbreak.exe in the phonedmg the OLD way?
if so, with the yellow triangle on your screen, dock your iphone and run jailbreak.exe in your phonedmg folder.

Do you have to use WinSCP to add themes to the phone? After completing all of these steps and starting WinSCP I get an error saying "Host Does Not Exist".

no you dont have to use winscp, now you can use summerboard inconjunction with ibrickr.

summerboard - set your background/dock

ibrickr - transfer over program icons to the correct folder.
