iPhone 2G Jailbroken a/QuickPwn and can't use Phone function

I bought this phone in Nov. 2007, so I assume it's a 2G? I'm not sure if it's a 1G - or is there such a thing? (Can you tell I'm kind of new at this? )

Anyway. I've Jailbroken it in the past using ZiPhone and eventually took an update and restored the whole thing.

I decided to JB it again and I used Quickpwn. I've only downloaded a few apps and my phone seemed to work fine last night. I woke up this morning and now my phone is running super slow and I can't use my phone function.

I can receive calls but I'm looking at my springboard instead of my phone functions. When I tap my Phone app I'm taken to the dial pad instead of my Speed dial or Recents, and I can't use the dial pad. After about 5 seconds it closes the function and I'm back at the springboard.

When looking at my dial pad I can't move to my Favourites, Recents or VM, so it's pretty useless. I can, however, look people up in my Contacts app and call them that way.

New Apps I installed are listed below:
  1. Backgrounder
  2. Categories
  3. Winterboard
  4. Dock Prefs
  5. BossPrefs
  6. Snapture
  7. Cycorder
  8. Cylay
  9. Quickgold
  10. Stacks
  11. The App Killswitch

The last app I uploaded last night was vWallpaper. Thinking this might be the issue I unistalled it this morning but it didn't make a difference.

Has anyone else run into a similar problem? I'm hoping I can avoid restoring my phone but will if it's my only option.

Any help would be much appreciated!

When you did the upgrade to 2.2 from ziphone. ... did you do an update or restore? Your best bet may be to do a DFU restore to stock 2.2 and then jailbreak again using the pwnage tool 2.2.1.

The following is an excellent guide:

I didn't do an upgrade from ziphone. I took an Apple iPhone update, which "un-broke"(?) my phone. I don't have ziphone any more.

I updated to 2.2 right before I ran Quickpwn yesterday.

What is a DFU restore?

And would you be able to recommend a link/site that explains the difference between Quickpwn and Pwnage Tool? I couldn't decide which hack would be in my best interest. I went with Quickpwn since I don't plan on unlocking my phone.

ETA:
Another reason I'm hesitant to restore is that I can't back up my itunes because I can't use my menu bar (File, View, Control, ect). I'm not sure why. I'm sure that's a whole other issue.

And I wanted to add that for some reason my phone's brightness is being dimmed way down, making it hard to see anything. When I go to "Settings-Brightness" my brightness level is just fine but I still can't see much of anything because it is so dim. I have to restart my phone to get it back to normal.

Also, I thought I uninstalled vWallpaper but I just got a call and it appears that vwallpaper (the video ringer function) is still working anyway.

If you don't need your phone unlocked, then Quickpwn 2.2 for the mac will work OK. The problem with selecting "upgrade" is that it only changes some files. Since the phone had been jailbroken with ziphone, there may be "stuff" left and that can be a problem.

DFU restore mode is accessed turning off the phone and then holding down the SLEEP and HOME buttons for exactly 10 seconds. At the end of 10 seconds release the SLEEP button but continue to hold the home button until itunes recognizes it. You should have a black screen with no graphics. If you have graphics, then you will need to try it again.

You can then do the RESTORE back to stock 2.2

Then, use Quickpwn to jailbreak.

DFU Restore Mode:

1. Power phone OFF. 2. Hold power + home for 10 seconds. 3. Let go of power and continue to hold home until iTunes finds the phone.

ull get a white screen when itunes finds the phone
then restore ur phone if itunes gives an error use an older one
then use qpwon and install the stuff u need like cydia

u can use pown tool and build a custom ipsw and restore ur phone with it

ziphone {do not use}

My phone was jailbroken with Quickpwn yesterday. I broke it with ziphone over 8 months ago and had since unbroken it. It's been restored since then.

I have the same problem. My phone is a completely virgin 16gb 3G. Never jailbroken before. I updated to 2.2 a couple weeks ago, and decided to give jailbreaking a try. I had done it many times on my old 1st gen iPhone so I'm no stranger to the process. I used quickpwn for Windows, everything went perfectly fine, but about two days later the phone stopped working. I can get calls, but if I try to open the phone app it goes directly to the dialer keypad (but shows no text) and the back to the homescreen in about 3 second. During calls that I receive if you look at the phone it's at the homescreen.

Someone else know what could cause this?

That's my exact problem, dubaudi. There is also no way to check voicemail. I went through and uninstalled each of my programs one by one to see if I could pinpoint the problem, but I never got my phone function back.

I eventually had to restore my phone to factory settings in order to use the phone properly again.

After the restore I again jailbroke the phone using Quickpwn and it worked great for about a week. This morning the problem started all over again. Perhaps it is a jailbreak issue with the 2.2 software?

I'm really hoping someone here knows what is going on and can help us out. It's a real pain to restore and sync the phone (time-wise).

Is it possible to downgrade to 2.1? If it is would you know how to do that?

I've done exactly the same thing. Did a full restore, which is a HUGE pain in the butt since I have 3 email accounts on the phone and it registers my whole inbox as new mail every time I do it. Not to mention re-arranging icons all over again and all the other basic setup.

Needless to say, I won't be jailbreaking it again soon until someone identifies why this problem is happening. It's just not worth the hassle.

I found a way around the Dialer issue by using the VoiceBox app from App Store. It has a usable dialer and can access the Contacts as well. I just use my earbuds to hangup from a call. This gets around the issue for now, but I still can't access the VM w/this method. I'll be restoring my phone later today.

This appears to be a possible solution. I found this here.
I've already restored my phone for the second time so I'll have to wait to see if the issue comes back. If it does I'll do as recomended below.

If after the jailbreak you can’t make dial calls because the phone dialer freezes and goes back to the main menu, try this:

1- Uninstall Kate from Installer: this is what everyone recommends, seems to work for a lot of people but didn’t work for me.

2- Then go to Installer again and uninstall these apps:

A) Mobile enhancer
B) RIP DEV preferences

3- Reboot your iPhone.

That’s what I did and got my dial pad back again.

Hope this helps someone, I spent like three hours searching for a solution…

I have the exact same issue now. I jailbroke two days ago (sunday) and today (tuesday) downloaded Categories (which I see Kathleen installed) and another person with the same issue in another website's forum also has that issue. as soon as i downloaded it and some other apps I got the problem. Unfortunately I cannot say for a fact that it's Categories that causes the issue because i downloaded a few other apps at the same time before I got a phone call.

I also installed Kate yesterday which installs the RipDev preference set, but this requires a restart of the phone to activate. I did not restart the phone until today after installing categories and others. so i cannot say if it was RipDev or Categories, but it's one of the two. I have uninstalled both and rebooted/reset the phone with no luck.

wait, i didn't realize that i had mobile enhancer still installed. got rid of it and reset the phone. worked like a charm. i'm so happy!

So theoretically if I just don't install Installer this time around and only Cydia, I should have no problem?

I had installed Kate both times and then it crashed, so I think Kate is the problem. I did install Categories the first time but I didn't do so the second time and it still crashed.

I've jailbroken it for the third time and I didn't install Kate. The Dialer hasn't crashed yet. I haven't used Installer for anything yet, either.

Thanks! I think I'll give it one more try tonight when I get home from work, but this time when QuickPWN asks, I'm going to tell it NOT to install Installer at all. Really, it didn't seem like Installer was as useful these days as it was back in the 1.1.4 days anyway.

So I re-did the jailbreak last week and so far everything has been fine <knock on wood>. The only thing I did differently was NOT install Installer during the jailbreak process.

Now I've got a whole seperate battery issue that I'm trying to figure out. Seems I can't get half a day from my battery since the weekend. Not sure if it's jailbreak related or not though...
