How to find iphone carrier

I bought a 3GS used and had no idea who the carrier was.
After reading numerous rumors and different theories, I found a program that was actually able to tell me the original carrier of my newly aquired locked iphone.

Download this program called iTools 2012.

This program has quite a few nice features for you to go through and explore, but the one that was useful to me was clicking VIEW DETAILS and scrolling down to where it says OPERATOR.
Be sure to have no SIM card in the phone as well.

You didn't. It just doesn't work anymore since Apple closed the access, though there were another new access, but those softwares never get any updates.
