Incompatibility w/ iOS 5.0.1 and BB 06.15.00?
I was given an iPhone 3GS Old Bootroom with the iPad baseband 06.15.00 and I upgraded it to iOS 5.0.1, jailbroke it, and hacktivated without a SIM card. I bought an H2O SIM on eBay and popped it in and it has never worked. The phone always says "Searching..." or "No Service." FWIW, I have an old de-activated AT&T SIM that when it's in also says the same thing.
I've tried with and without ultrasn0w and while I understand unlocking is not required for H2O, I thought it may be needed because of using the iPad baseband. I tried downgrading to 4.3.5 and had the same result.
I've emailed H2O but from what I've read their customer service isn't stellar. Should I suspect a bad SIM here? The eBay seller had excellent feedback. Or do I have some kind of unholy combination of firmware/baseband/phone/SIM-carrier to cause this not to work? FWIW, WiFi works fine, just no cellular anything, voice or data.
Thanks!

Ultrasnow doesnt work with 5.0.1 yet (at least not without some tweaking). What you need to do is restore again but do not hactivate. Use the old ATT sim to activate then the H2O sim should work I believe.

Thanks for the quick reply Simon. Would an old, unactivated AT&T SIM work to activate it?

If you restored to a regular 5.0.1 with the ipad baseband you will also need to reflash the ipad baseband since your baseband is probably in an inconsistent state.
Yes it will
So your steps should be this. First use redsnow to reflash the ipad baseband. Then use snowbreeze to make a custom 5.0.1 and restore to that in itunes (make sure you do not hactivate the custom firmware). Then use the ATT sim to activate the iphone in itunes. Then pop your H2O sim in after.

I've used H2O in 3GS and 3G with 06.15.00 baseband no unlock via ultrasn0w necessary but if you updated to 5.0.1 and you have your regular baseband now I recommend to leave like that since you will lose GPS if you flash it to 06.15.00 since with h2o you don't need to unlock you can use it with the regular baseband and it's better for you, I don't think the SIM Card is bad just try the sim card in another phone I have an iPhone 3GS with the same problem witch I cannot activate due to the same problem

I'll try using redsn0w to reflash the BB, make a BB-less 5.0.1 firmware, and flash that and see how it goes. I won't get to it until late tomorrow or Wed but I'll be sure to report back on my success.
Does 06.15.00 have trouble with GPS on H2O?

This worked! Thanks Simon! I had to reset the network settings after changing SIMs to keep a steady signal. I made a test call and after I hung up I had a pop-up with how much balance I had left, and this is NOT jailbroken (I only chose the BB-less IPSW in sn0wbreeze). Now I just wish I hadn't flashed the iPad BB...
