Whoever helps me wins... something :P
Hello MMI community,
First, I apologize if there may already be guides on this. I am not very technically literate, at least with this kind of stuff, so I am going to need more than one simple guide.
I am a soldier currently deployed to Afghanistan. I have an iPhone 3GS. My laptop is a MacbookPro, but I do not have internet on it- I get internet acccess via the MWR computers here, so I download things I need, burn them onto discs and put them on my laptop that way. I downloaded whatever the latest firmware was while I was home on midtour leave- mid September. For those of you that are familiar with Afghanistan, we have a primary cell phone provider here, a company by the name of Roshan. I know it has been done as I have seen some personnel at bigger bases doing it- you can buy a Roshan SIM card, put it in an unlocked iPhone and make it word.
Basically, what I am asking for, is an incredibly dumbed-down version of how to take an iPhone 3GS, jailbreak it on whatever the best jailbreak/unlock firmware is (I understand the latest one will not work) and if possible links. In essence, just a list of what version firmware, what version jailbreak/unlock would be perfect.
Whoever helps me... well I can't promise anything but I'll at least send you a picture from here, maybe even a small token of appreciation from a local bazaar or something.
I understand this may be covered by guides already but the net here is incredibly slow and my comprehension of this stuff is less than optimal, so I'd really appreciate the help.

Hey there.
Your solution should be pretty simple!
-Go to:
www.limera1n.com
-Download that program to ur Mac
-open limera1n and click 'Make It Ra1n'
-Follow the limera1n prompts together w/ ur iPhone
INITIAL CYDIA SETUP *WiFi access is required:
-After the jailbreak, open Cydia
-Cydia will do it's thing and reboot ur phone
-Open Cydia again, and choose User in the popup window. Cydia will also download packages at this point and show that updates/Changes are available.
-Do the Complete Upgrade (2nd option) *phone will reboot again
-To unlock, follow this: http://tipsneeded.com/unlock-iphone-3gs-41-firmware/
BUT you might already have ultrasn0w available to download if you do a Search in Cydia.
-Install ultrasn0w
Now u should be unlocked! Use a paperclip to pop out the SIM card and place the new SIM in.
Check that u have service!

If he just updates to 4.1 he will also update his baseband. The current baseband is not unlockable.

There is but it requires more steps:
Get IPhone Explorer here:
http://www.macroplant.com/iphoneexplorer/
Get the ultrasn0w app here: http://uploading.com/files/deb12dm7/...1.1-1.deb.html
-Make a duplicate of the ultrasn0w.deb file for backup reasons!
-Create a folder on ur Mac named Cydia (capitalization is always important)
-Create a folder inside the Cydia folder named AutoInstall
-Place one of the duplicate ultrasn0w.deb files into the AutoInstall folder.
Open iPhone Explorer:
Go to ROOT (/) var/root/Media and drop the Cydia folder from ur MacBook into the Media folder. The end result will be:
/var/root/Media/Cydia/AutoInstall
Switch out ur SIM and reboot! Hopefully you'll be all setup!

Here is an alternative solution which will get you on the latest firmware and is a little easier to get it unlocked without wifi:
The easiest way for you to do this going to be with pwnagetool. Download the pwnagetool, the 4.1 firmware and ultrasn0w (link above a couple of threads up) from the internet and burn them to disc. Links are here:
Download PwnageTool 4.1.2 to Jailbreak iOS 4.1 on iPhone 4, iPod touch 4G, iPad, Apple TV 2G and More | Redmond Pie
Since you don't have wifi, then you need to add ultrasnow to your custom firmware. Add ultrasn0w to your custom firmware you build with pwnage tool (use expert mode). Just follow the instructions on the link and you should be up and running in no time.
After you've got the custom firmware installed, you'll find ultrasn0w in cydia, just install that.
Keep up the good work!Last edited by eyeRobot; 10-24-2010 at 09:23 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

@westonben
Nice! I completely forgot about pwnage! That's alot easier than my way!
I just had a thought, though. Will he be able to restore to a custom firmware (or any kind of firmware) w/o Internet access? I thought Apple/Saurik had to verify the FW via Internet. I could be wrong...maybe Sauriks host file doesn't require online access....IDK!

SHSH are not required for custom firmwares. Not sure if you still need an Internet connection. TSS server in tiny umbrella would get around it if you do.

So it didn't unlock???
Are you at least jailbroken?
Did u install Cydia via the limera1n icon/app? ....uh oh, I just realized you can't get Cydia installed (via limera1n or greenpois0n) without an Internet connection!!!! Crap!!!!
Okay, try westonbens idea. See if that will let u in. I'm not sure about the Internet connection during restore but it's worth a shot.
Otherwise, I think there is a way to get cydia installed w/o Internet but I'll have to research it.

Okay, found the Cydia.deb link! *Its about halfway down the page. Get it here:
http://ipod-touch-max.ru/cydia/index...kage&id=18992#
-First, open up Iphone Explorer and place the Cydia.deb file in the /var/root/Media/Cydia/AutoInstall folder.
-REBOOT
-Verify that Cydia is on your phone.
If so, open Iphone Explorer and place the ultrasn0w.deb file in that same AutoInstall folder
-REBOOT again
-You should now be unlocked!
Let us know, k!

I have verified the Cydia.deb file works as described!!!
My phone went crazy so I had to restore. I restored then jailbroke w/ limera1n. Installed Cydia.deb via SSH (iPhone explorer)!!! Ultrasn0w install should work the same way!
Good luck!

Some of the sites here are blocked =/
I guess that leaves me two options. I can ask a friend to mail me a disc, or find somebody to email me the files... if you have them all handy, my email is this username at gmail.com... if they won't email I'll ask someone to mail me a CD with them
Oh, and might be a dumb question, but which SIM should I have in during this process, or does that matter?
