Default Traveling to Europe with an unlocked iPhone

The iPhone can cost more than buying a replacement, if you use it's full features outside of your AT&T service area--especially if you use any data features.

With an unlocked iPhone, has anyone had experience with buying a short-term, pre-paid cellular account w/SIM from a European provider? Before my iPhone life, I had an unlocked Nokia phone and traveled to Ireland. Vodafone offered a pre-paid with SIM for about $25, which included 50 minutes and a local (Irish) phone number. (Talk about customer service, the Irish Vodafone CSR even faxed a long instruction sheet on how to configure my phone model for their network to my hotel and actually called me back a couple of hours later to ask if I had any questions!! ) Anyway, I had the same experience a few years later in France. Now, that was just phone calls and no data plans involved. So, I'm wondering what's possible and manageable these days, with an unlocked iPhone.

I am over here in Germany with the Army, and have an unlocked 3g running with VODAFONE, and T-mobile prepaid phone cards. The chip you need IS a prepaid, cost about $35.00 and is a data card. you pay 5 Euro for 24 hours, not bad for a couple day trip, but for the long haul you are looking at $300.00+ for one month. Long story short, it does work, but is a little spendy. Most hotels in Germany, the netherlands, England, and some in france give you wireless for free if you stay in the hotel. If you happen to be standing NEAR the hotel...
As always, and even in PORTUGAL, the golden arches is, almost without exception, a hot spot.
buy a cheeseburger with a little differient taste and get your push, weather...
