Hi all!
I had the opportunity to upgrade to the iphone for $299.00. I just sold my 2g ipod for $289.00 on fleabay. I was going to buy the 3g ipod, but all of you know apple left out the camera and built in mike.
So for the same price ($299) I upgraded to the iphone(32 Gb)- we were staying with att anyway. I gave up my LG incite (which I loved) and the $10.00 family data for the iphone's $30.00 data (). After 5 1/2 weeks of iphone use, I decided it wasn't worth the extra money, and I missed my incite. So I called ATT and switched back to my dumbphone(any will do), added back the family data, and removed the iphone, and fixed voicemail. And then put my chip back into my incite. I told them my bill went up way too much and " I didn't even like the iphone!" She switched me no problem. She cautioned me if I PUT THE CHIP BACK INTO THE IPHONE, THE $30.00 PLAN WOULD BE PUT BACK ON.
There is a point to this story. Bear with me! Now I had essentially a great Ipod touch with a camera and microphone, with no phone ability except skype. Which is why I bought the iphone in the 1st place. A better product for the $$$.
I really wanted the ability to make a real phone call in case of an emergency and I had forgotten my att phone(incite). I sent an email to air voice wireless asking them where I could get hold of their sim card and she graciously consented to send me one free if I told her what phone I was planning on using. Somewhere in my research I read no iphones would be allowed since this is a mvno using att towers. So I gave her my old blackjack imei, picked my home city for my number (any in the usa)) and a couple days later I had my sim card.
All I had to do is buy $10.00 refill off their site- used paypal- and the next day, I had 100 minutes for my $10.00. 10c/min or 10c/text and it lasts 90 days and will roll over if you refill before expiring. I put the card in my iphone( jailbroked and unlocked) and I had service. (This card will work on a non jailbroke and locked phone since att is the background equipment). A great back up for a phone if batteries die, or is forgotten, and you can still use the wifi for any data you wish to use! All for $3.33 a month. Very reasonable for a back up phone and if you need a # from a specific city, this is a great way to do it cheap!! And I maintained the functionality of the iphone with no data plan forced on me. Check out Air Voice Wireless, a good alternative and they have been in business for 10 years!
I was having trouble setting up voicemail thru air voice wireless.
Found a free solution to restore visual voicemail to your iphone using this prepaid gsm. A free account thru you mail.com. Check it out. I did need to call to activate instead of receiving a text. Don't know why. Also, free answer tones -good selection!
You get texts if you want notifications(you will pay 10c per text to do it that way), or can call their #to pick up, or you can go on line to hear your messages, or you can pay to get a transcription service. This is very similar to google voice. Looks like it will work well.
I am in NJ and have found that the edge signal gives a better phone connection for voice calls than 3G in my area. With 3G I had 1 bar and my husband with the same phone and carrier had 4 bars. The only difference is he was running edge and I was running 3G. ( On blackjacks) When I switched signals, I got the 4 bars too. So, for voice calls, edge works better, at least where we are. We found out that he had an old sim card that only did 2G or edge. That's when he got his Iphone. He uses his phone for business. The $30.00 data plan is used alot with him. I found that for me, $30.00 for data was a waste. So I switched back to an old phone and the $10.00 data.
The whole point of going with air voice is to not have a data plan and use wifi on the iphone. No need for 3G with no data plan and better voice service with edge.
