My Japanese iPhone gift

I was given a gift of an iPhone 3G that was purchased in Japan and comes with no SIM. I have another iPhone 3G purchased in the US with an AT&T SIM. I have put my US AT&T SIM in my Japanese iPhone, but iTunes says the SIM 'does not appear to be supported'.

I have read many threads about jailbreaking and unlocking, but can't get started with this phone.

Further complicating things, is that my computers are all Windows.

What can I do with this situation?

So far, it is just a nice paperweight.

Perhaps if you set up the Japanese one as a new phone in iTunes.
Not sure tho, but perhaps worth a try.

. iThank you for continuing to help me !!!

Thanks for that generous offer, but since my last post I have managed to run QuickPwn to jailbreak - I think I need to downgrade the phone firmware, because without thinking I let iTunes put 2.2.1 on it and got the latest modem firmware with it. Which I now find out is not unlockable.

Can anyone confirm that yellowsnow works on modem firmware 2.30 or that i can downgrade back to 2.28 ??

Oh dear. Try Fuzzy but it only works on a few 3Gs that have BL5.08
If you don't have BL 5.08 you have just stopped YellowSn0w from working and will have to use a 'piggyback' SIM.

Good luck.

Deeper and deeper and .......

I have used BBUpdater to find my bootloader version is 6.02

so...

can i downgrade to BL 5.08 from 6.02 ??

or

is it reasonable to wait for yellowsn0w to work on modem FW of 2.30

or

what is a 'piggyback SIM' ?

in settings-general-about my carrier setting is (null)(null)

does this mean my phone is not locked?

how can i get it to AT&T ?

I have a 3g iphone with 2.2.1 (5H111) ; modem FW is 2.30 ; bootloader is 6.02 and carrier is (null) (null)

You can't downgrade to BL 5.08

YellowSn0w will might work for BB 4.2x when FW 3.0 is realeased but there is no guarantee.

A 'piggyback' SIM is a generic name for the cards that fit in with your SIM that 'unlock' your phone such as the Gevey SIM or TurboSIM or numerous others. All work with varying degrees of success but none are perfect. I don't know which, if any will give you 3G reception on AT&T.

Your phone is locked.
