There is no possible downgrade since your baseband has been updated as well. You should have had just follow the messages clearly indicating not to update yet.

U can downgrade back from 2.2.1 to 2.2 Firmware but modem will stay at 2.30.03. For officially unlock iPhone, can jailbreak again to get back all 3rd party apps, for locked iPhone, can jailbreak but phone will not work. Have tried it on my official unlocked iPhone.

Usually entering DFU mode and shift-restoring in iTunes works. I havent tested this lately, but it should work since iTunes itself wasnt updated to install .1

could you define shift-restore

EDIT: That was a retarded question. I figured out how to do it.
I'm downloading iPhone1,1_2.0.1_5B108_Restore.ipsw
I hope this does the trick.

shift restore doesn't work , it'll give you a 1013 error due to the baseband.I tried this last night.

I can confirm you can downgrade from 2.2.1 to 2.2 using the DFU mode. My steps:

1. Enter DFU mode (turn off iPhone and hold the home button while rebooting and the screen should not turn on)
2.(iTunes says you must restore) On windows hold the SHIFT key and click the restore button.
3. Find where the 2.2 IPSW is.
4. Allow it to restore.
5. Dl ZiPhone and extract
6. Copy iTunesMobileDevice.dll from Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Bin into the extracted ziphone
7. Open ziphone and click (click to show adanced features) and hit normal mode
8. Allow ziphone to work, but it will not automatically reboot
9. Do a hard reboot (hold the home button + the power until the apple logo appears)
10. It should now be at the activation screen and allow iTunes to activate.
10. Done

P.S. I am running Vista Ultimate, and the latest iTunes(8.0.2), and baseband 2.30.

But you haven't downgraded the baseband....So it can't be unlocked.

There is no way to downgrade the 3G's bb period. You dont need to downgrade it to restore to an earlier OS
