I would never work. As you stated the iphone is built to run on a GSM network, Verizon is a CDMA network.
Verizon does have a phone (blackberry) that excepts a simcard for use OVERSEAS, it will piggy-back on GSM networks.
HOWEVER, this function is disabled through Verizon if you were to try it here in the United States, it just wont pickup service.
Therefore, No, you cannot get the iphone on Verizon's network.
