Howdy,
Just wondering if anyone can help me. I was given an iPhone (1st gen/2G) by a friend who is no techno-dude, and asked for my help. He explained that the phone had been purchased in the states, then unlocked or whatever for use in Canada before the actual iPhone was released here. He said that the phone had stopped working because his wife & coworker had been fiddling with apps & itunes and blah blah blah and now it was just bricked. So i said i would look at it having experienced jailbreaking and upgrading the firmware on my iPod touch.
So i downloaded the 2.1 ipsw file, QuickPwn 2.1 and accompanying files (boot loaders, etc) and walked through this process with flying colours. In QuickPwn i selected Add Installer, Add Cydia, Replace Boot logos, & Unlock Phone. See this link for the step by step on what i did:

Indeed i have verified that the iPhone is running v2.1 and all associated functionality and applications are running flawlessly. My only problem right now is that it won't act as a phone!
I go into Settings > Carrier. When it displays the list, i can choose from Automatic and Rogers. When i select ROGERS, it gives me the following error message:
Network Lost
Your selected cellular network is no longer available. You can choose a different network in Settings.
Choosing Automatic allows me to continue, but i still never end up with service.
Further, if i go into General > About, the carrier says Rogers 2.6
Now i know there is a Rogers SIM card installed as i had a quick look at that, but i haven't got a clue if it's valid or even if it requires activation of any kind or whatever. I've never had any experience with GSM phones yet. So, before calling Rogers and having to wait for someone with some experience, i was hoping to find someone out there who can help me.
Should i simply restore to the valid 2.1 ipsw? Seeing as how Rogers is now a legitimate carrier, should that not work? Are 2G iPhones able to work in Canada, etc. etc. etc? Any guidance here would be extremely helpful!
Cheers, ynot2k
