Hi to all,
I bought an iPhone 3G from Rogers as part of an upgrade plan, then asked to get a 2MB plan since the 6GB must be kept for 3 years and I was not sure yet to want to keep it; at $90 per month after taxes, it's still a pretty stiff bill that I just can't afford as a student. Basically, I used my Motorola KRZR K1 to 1- call 2- SMS friends and 3- check and reply to urgent emails, all for $51 approximately after taxes, which is surely expensive, but I can pay.
I tested the iPod Touch for a month I borrowed from a friend, and found the internet micro-tablet function wonderful, especially considering it supports VPN connections, although wifi sensitivity is on the lower side (almost too low for me), but not exactly indispensable since I intend to get a laptop anyway. Still, I was convinced enough to buy an iPhone to test it.
It is a jailbroken 2.0.2 by a friend who has a Mac.
I tested it and it happened that I already made more than a megabyte in 3 days only checking emails occasionally. As I saw on BigBoss's site that there was a package to make use of Rogers's $7 WAP plan such as T-Mobiles one, I just wanted to know if it was the same hack, only with different IP adresses and credentials. The fact that there is not a single post on this still makes me wonder.
I can be a guinea pig for some days until I reach the end of the "buyer's remorse" period, as I can live without phoning, but not without SMS.
I understood so far that I must edit the 2 "proxy.pac" files and giving them the IP adresses of Rogers' servers, but also that I would need to change the phone's IMEI, something I don't know.
On the other phone, I basically wrote down the settings for the GoRogers session from the previous Motorola KRZR K1; it allowed me to follow links, but not directly go to an URL. Oh well, I'm only using it to (slowly) check my emails.
So far, has anyone managed to get a "Rogers hack" working on an iPhone, and if yes, how? Basically, I only want to have access to my emails on the go, only browsing on occasion (face it, it's cool but not that fast to surf on this device when you have big fingers), not exaggerating to use YouTube or such. I don't want to screw Rogers (yet!) since I'm new to a 3-year contract and that there were quite generous until now.
The second question is about the SIM-unlock; if I happen to be in a different country for a prolonged period, it would be pointless to continue using Roger's plans; do anyone here knows an approximate time frame (if any) a reliable SIM-unlock may appear? I read that this 3G iPhone was currently impossible to unlock due to too-perfect engineering, but I may have outdated information.
I I can't find reliable information on these two questions before the 5th of October, I will simply bring the phone back to where I bought it, but honestly, I love it, and its virtual keyboard is really efficient at correcting mistakes.
thanks to everyone who may give me info, or point me in the right direction
