I have a 3g with rogers and my push mail works perfectly. I never have to open the app to check for mail, it always just shows when there's a new email.

Hello,
Push e-mail on the iPhone as far as I know is limited to MS Exchange, MobileME, and Yahoo. Yahoo's push service is horrendous to start with so I wouldn't bother with it. As for .mac I am uncertain if push is still supported for that service as Apple migrated to MobileME with the launch of the iPhone 3G. Also when using a push based email the fetch new data settings must be configured appropriately for your e-mail. If you have a push enabled e-mail on your phone make sure to go to Settings > Fetch New Data > Advanced and set up the e-mail account to use push and not fetch, after that its the push server's job to get the info to the device.
