iPhone MAY be illegal in Japan
-----------[ THIS APPLIES TO JAPAN ONLY / I DONT KNOW ABOUT OTHER COUNTRIES ]-------------------
There is a law in Japan, that require Mobile phones to have a "shutter" sound when using the camera. Well yes there is a shutter sound on the iPhone that can't be turned off or can it?!
While playing a song, you can take a picture without the shutter sound going off.
So if you are in Japan, give it a shot.
1) Plugin the headset
2) Play a song
3) hit the home button
4) open the camera app and take a picture
I am sure there will be a new wave of "up-the-skirt" porn hitting Japan...Last edited by rbalfour; 08-06-2008 at 04:30 AM. Reason: added notice

Nope, it still makes the shutter sound when playing a song.

What country and what carrier?
If the answers aren't
1) Japan
2) Softbank
then we are talking about the same thing. I have tested 3 phones already. Same results. No shutter sound.
We don't have 1G/2.0fw, it's 2G/2.0 here.
It doesn't really matter. Other phones aren't that great either. But it still cause the government to create the law/policy.how clear can these damn pics be haaaaaa
Beyond that, I am planning to head to a Softbank shop and show them. It's always great to see the horror on their faces.Last edited by rbalfour; 08-06-2008 at 04:29 AM. Reason: another quote

Not like they'd be able to hear it with the iPhone's speaker

that can be easily fixed by a special software patch if it becomes a real legality.

Yes you can jailbreak the iphone and patch it but the iphone 3g's in japan always make a sound when you take a picture if it is not jailbroken and patched. its kind of weird if you ask me, that this became so bad that they had to make a law prohibiting phones that don't make a loud shutter sound when the camera takes a picture. If you are a creep and that is honestly something you really want in a phone, it seems like the iphone wouldn't be ideal for that anyway because the phone is touch screen so it would be a bit harder to take a picture without being able to see/feel where the button is to take the pic up some poor beezies skirt

Why not just put your thumb over the speaker?

I hope that most people here have already come to the realization that women wear panties.

Just flip the silent switch on? :P
Works on the 1st Gen, don't have a 3G handy to test it on.
or just replace the shutter sound with a blank sound file or
use a photo app that doesn't have a sound.
There is no way to enforce the shutter sound imo.The greatest iPhone project ever - coming soon...

It's too late anyways.
Softbank has it out all over jp, not like you can take a decent pic with a weak 2mgp camera.
In jp we had 2 mgp's 4 years ago.
p.s upskirts are the best!

Haha....
and yeah, all other phones here make the shutter sound even when in silent mode. I guess the serious upskirter will find other methods though - at risk of doing jail time, losing your job, and having your name and face plastered all over television and the media if you're caught. Can't see how ANY blurry panty-pic is worth THAT risk.
I'm guessing softbank would have modded the iPhone here to always make the shutter sound? (They modded my WM6 device to the point of uselessness - hence tentatively considering an iphone, but one purchased outside Japan legally unlocked such as HK - coz I don't know what softbank have messed around with, nor if I can ever unlock it to avoid roaming charges and use local prepaids when travelling. I mean, what if I move back home to Australia in a year, my Softbank iPhone will be relegated to an iTouch level?)
blah blah blah yawn
