Question Is EDGE available for O2 PAYG ?
    Hello,

I searched but couldn't find what I'm looking for.

I have bought my 1.1.2 OTB Iphone, got it jailbroken and working on O2 PAYG. Since I suffer to get to any wifi point, I was thinking to get EDGE working since it gives me (it is not activated, you are not subscribed to EDGE) message.

I read somewhere that you can fix this problem by using putty with SSHing your Iphone with some commands, does this solve the problem and you can use EDGE then ? or it is for contract users only ?

    Thanks

Can someone please confirm if I got EDGE working or not on PAYG ?

I have added the Web Bolt On which costs like 7.5

Then Added the following settings to EDGE:
    payandgo.o2.co.uk
    user: payandgo
    password: payandgo

Now when I open youtube for example, the message (Couldn't Activate EDGE, You are Not subscribed to EDGE) Has GONE, But instead, I am getting the Error on Safari:

    Safari Can't Open The Page.
The Error Was : "lost network connection"
    (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005)

Any Ideas about this please ?

    Something odd happened yesterday.

I have tried many things to get it working but the surprise was the only site I can go to is www.o2.co.uk and I browse it all without problems, when I go to google or any other website It starts to give me the 1005 Error again.

I can confirm that EDGE is working on O2 PAYG

I just added the key to in the references.plist that invlokes to read the proxy.pac

Though it is slow, but better than nothing

One more thing left, I get the youtube error: Youtube videos require EDGE or Wi-fi Connection. Any1 ot this error before ?

Is 'mobile web' enabled for O2 PAYG customers?

I thought the GPRS we got was simply a WAP gateway?

Ahh.. I've just read about the "bolt on" I didn't know they did this.. Cool!

No mr greedy, it is EDGE / GPRS (when there is no EDGE coverage).

Now one thing left , the youtube, then everything will be perfect

I can tell you that it's not real EDGE. I had this hack back in late October, and I'm aware that O2 don't allow sims for EDGE connection unless you are on contract. And not a lot of UK is covered by true EDGE (only 30% of the country so far I believe). I have hacked iPhone, and my friend has an official OTB UK iPhone, and he doesn't have the "E" symbol at the top. Just a blue square. 1.1.1 phones and below have a flaw: they show the "E" symbol to represent both GPRS and EDGE; the "E" doesn't always mean you have EDGE.
On 1.1.2 phones however, the blank blue square means "no edge".

Edit: use the 7.50 web bolt on...very good deal, but when you cancel it, leave at least 48 hours between the time when you cancel and the time you top up next, or you'll lose 7.50 for nothing.

I was wondering this to. I followed the intructions in http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=383315
and have now got GPRS working on my iphone. Is it true that you can't EDGE on pay and go? I have only tested at home where i get bad o2 signal. Are the EDGE speeds much quicker than the GPRS which seems really slow? I am debating either doing the 7.50 bolt on or just getting a contract?

    It's true.

O2 GPRS doesn't allow me to check my email on my phone, or use websites that require logging in, like hotmail or this site for instance. I think that EDGE allows you to do more, plus it's faster than GPRS, when you're in London especially.

I phoned O2 and they told me EDGE speeds are not possible on O2 PAYG.
BUT I can now send and receive emails on mail.app via GPRS.

    1. First use the 1.1.2 GPRS fix (works with 1.1.4) located here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=383315 - this got my data working very easily.
    2. Register an O2 email account. http://www.o2.co.uk
    3. Go to Settings/Mail/Add account, on your iphone and add a pop account with these settings:

    Pop Account information
    Name : (your name)
    Address : [email protected]
    Description : O2 Email

    Incoming Mail Server
    Host Name : mail.o2.co.uk:110
    User Name : [email protected]
    Password : (email password)

    Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
    Host name : smtp.o2.co.uk:25

    (leave the optional fields blank)

3.Set your Gmail/Yahoo account to forward all emails to your [email protected] account.

Note: You must use O2 email, payg customers are restricted to o2 servers. BUT, just forward all your mail from gmail/yahoo or any other email provider that supports email forwarding. This is a perfect solution for me anyways. i got the unlimited web bolt on, so i just deleted my previous gmail IMAP account and now only use the o2 pop email through mail.app! Receives as normal if connected to wi-fi.

    Hope this helps!!

Best way to discover whether your edge is working or not is to go to settings, usage.. under edge.. see if there is anby data transferred to and from if there is most likely you're using edge... that's how I prevented myself being charged like mad by O2
