This is great news even though I already have my iPhone and am with Rogers. I would look forward to the iPhone plan that Rogers will have but lets be honest there is an incredibly slim chance that we will have the benefits that the US has with AT&T. We will be lucky to get 1GB of data for $100 per month.

There is a 1gb data plan for rogers for 65 bucks already Icecold.

Sorry I guess I should have read what I wrote before posting. I meant a plan for $100 per month as in a complete plan for $100 per month. I have the 1gb data plan currently and combined with my voice plan I sit at just over $130 a month and it isn't near what the AT&T iphone plan is. Long story short it would be nice to see a complete plan for around the $75 mark even if the plan doesn't include unlimited data but just 1gb (unlimited would be nice of course). I guess speculating won't get us anywhere until they actually announce the plan, just my two cents more than anything.

    Hey guys,

Just the other day I was reading that Rogers released an unlimited mobile data plan for $7, whats that all about? I assume just basic carrier internet like weather and crap. My iphone is on the way, what is a decent plan without breaking the bank?

In Japan all they have is unlimited carrier and PC site internet, $40-$55 respectivly.

    Thanks in advance,
    gixx

I actually called Rogers about that $7 unlimited mobile plan and found out that it is only unlimited for specific domains. Basically it is unlimited for accessing facebook and myspace and you can access google and yahoo for searching. The catch however is that if you search for Apple Computers for example in Google it doesn't cost you but the minute you click a search result link, to go to Apples website for example, and leave Googles site it is $0.05/kb. The plan also allows you to check and send unlimited email as long as you use specific domains such as hotmail or yahoo or gmail. Those are just the domains I remember off the top of my head I know there is a couple more but not many. For me I never do the Social network thing so it doesn't do me any good.

With regards to what plan is good, when it comes to the data aspect there is no good plan without breaking the bank. You can get decent voice plans but when it comes to data you are looking at $65 for 1gb just for data and then your voice plan is on top of that.

I couldn't possibly agree more with you, until Canada opens up to free marketing to bring in competition there isn't much that can be done. Unfortunately in Canada the system borders on Socialism in cases such as these. I'm not trying to turn this political I just don't understand why all the cellphone providers in Canada are deciding to go the opposite direction. Bell, Telus and Rogers all have stated that as of May they will not have unlimited data plans anymore. I went with Bell 2 years ago and had an unlimited data plan that only cost me $97 a month all in including voice and being obsessed with the iPhone, stupid me, I cancelled that plan to go with Rogers in order to have the iPhone. The thing that confuses me is that Rogers has unlimited mobileTV access for $9 but nothing but crappy data plans. Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't mobileTV viewing on a regular bases add up to a fair amount of bandwith? Maybe even more than what most people would use a data package for? I have a Slingbox at home and a Telus pc card with unlimited data but to test I streamed the hockey game from my house to my laptop and one hour of the game worked out to 480mb transferred however the video compression would most likely be different for a cellphone. Enough viewing though and I am sure either way it adds up to a lot of data transfer...

    When your right your right

I feel the bottom line is the issue of Canadian companies and the CRTC not wanting to adapt to the future (never mind be proactive) I remember when I was working for Clearnet and Bell all the network and handset stuff "coming down the pipe" did eventyually come to Canada, 4-6 years later...

I think that eventually our mobile market will look similar if not the same as the American market today, the question is how long will it take to get us out of the Startac era...
