What is required to SSH into iPhone

I'm wondering what is actually required to SSH into an iPhone. Is it an internal network between computer and iPhone via wireless, Is it a wireless network connection with internet behind it, Is it a wireless network connection with no internet behind it?

The reason why I'm asking is because I've tried with no luck to create a computer to computer network shared over Airport and to SSH into the phone and I have no luck. I've also tried to use share my Wireless Broad Band card via Airport and join it but that was unsuccessful. I've also tried using just a wireless router that is not connected to an internet connection that is unsecured in order to SSH into the phone but that didn't seem to work all the time.

I was able to get in once but after that all attempts failed via terminal and fugu or cyberduck.

The IP's that I've tried are 10.0.1.x, 192.168.1.x

at home is the only place that I seem to be able to do any modding through SSH. I have an Apple Extreme N Router and I have no problems there but when I'm not at home and at the office or a friends house without a wireless connection to connect to I seem to not be able to do things so easily...

Any insight?

Of course I have an activated phone, and all necessary software installed on phone and mac since it works at one place and not others
