10-17-2011, 01:33 PM #1Recovery software - How to recover photos from iPhone 4 iOS 5 without a backup
I recently upgraded my iphone from iOS 4.2 to 5.0, and in the process of restoring my iphone, my photos and some other settings (some email accounts and phone number "favorites") were not restored. I'm very upset about the pictures....I've lost about 7 months worth.
Before I performed the upgrade, I backed up my iphone, however it appears that the backup did not backup my pictures, as I used some third party software to see if there were pics in the back-up which there was not.
I don't sync my pics with iphoto, because I have previously restored my camera roll from a backup several times in the past, with no issues.
What are my options to find all these lost pics? PS - I use a Mac to sync (but I also have a PC).
1) Is there a way to go back to older version of my back-up file? Like from a couple days ago? It looks like itunes only stores a couple backup files. Do you think I could find older/deleted/overwritten versions with file recovery software?
2) Is there any file recovery software that can look on the iphone's hard disk for these "deleted" picture files? In the past, I've used file rescue software on an SD card to retrieve deleted pics, and it works flawlessly.
3) With regards to #3 above are there any jailbroken apps to help make it easier to explore the iphone from a computer?
Any help is appreciated!!

there are some suggestions in this thread:
extract photos from iphone backup files?
particularly this one:
iPhone / iPod Touch Backup Extractor
But all of them require you to have "good" backups with the pictures somewhere on the computer you used to sync the phone with.
Unfortunately, you can't run the kind of low-level "rescue" software on the iPhone the way you have on SD cards. The filesystem doesn't work that way. There aren't any JB programs that will do it, because they all work *within* the iOS storage API, and not around it.

That is the problem....there are no pictures in the backup, I checked using this software.
I need a method to search the iphone's disk directly.
Any suggestions? I've read where people have downloaded and "image" of the iphone's disk to their mac/pc and then used recovery software to search it for lost pictures. The process seems very lengthy and complicated....I was wondering if there was a more direct way of getting the disk image to a PC.

was there a previous backup prior to the last one? if so, just restore to that one. you may not have all 7months of pics back, but hopefully you'll get most of them

Sorry to revive a thread but I want to see if there has been any progress on this. Same predicament...deleted a bunch of photos and videos before doing a backup.
I've tried so many tools, and I can mount the iPhone on my Mac desktop, but I have found NO recovery apps (Tech Tool, SD Recovery, etc.) that will see the disk and let me try to recover. I also can't find any way to create an image.
The old dd commands to create an input file/output file don't work any more with this OS either.
So, am I missing any other solutions out there to recover deleted files from an iOS 5.01 device like my iPhone 4? I can't imagine there aren't tools that Private Investigators use for forensic discovery that could do this.

I had this same problem when updating my iPhone 4 to iOS 6 today. Found this thread and it was helpful, however, iExplorer requires you to buy a license to recover the photos which costs $34.99. Found another free alternative for Mac or Windows, Dr.Fone for iOS. Worked like a charm and I didn't have to grab my wallet.

There are other - better - alternatives , like: Enigma Recovery | Smartphone Recovery Software
They're all paid. I don't know of a free method. If you do, please let me know. Dr.Fone is not free.

How stupid of me to leave my iPad when a kid's playing around and spilled his milk on my iPad! Frustrating! I downloaded the trial version of Dr.Fone. It looks so easy to use and is such a big help. Thanks! I'm now ready to download full version for full recovery.
