new iphone

i received my new iphone pre fed x.
I am not even home yet
Anyway, i have picked up a G3 imac with safari and downloaded independance, new verson.
Even though i have been reading for a couple of weeks now i am somewhat confused.
I will be using the phone with TM.
Of course i will want to be about to use u-tube and go to ebay and such.

There is not a lot of common step by step instructions for each version of filmware, its kinda spread out.

I assume i need to find the current filmware verson first (lets just say it is 1.1.3).
(At this point will i need to backup all the filmware before i go any futher?
Also can i save the imie and such before i do anything else?

It looks like i need to jail break the phone in order to activate and unsim lock. After that i need to unjail break. Then im ready to go???
I assume i am missing a bunch of stuff here.
I really have not seen a step by step guide but i assume there are sereral out there somewhere.
any links for the first timer would be great.

Download ZiPhone, it puts all the steps into. Unlock, JB, Activate, youtube...and such are all working.

After that, remember to read all the stickies.

Ok, i have the latest ziphone, do i leave the sim card in during this process?

I don't think i matters what sim card is in the phone, but I heard it's better to use your t-mo card
